1. She was elected leader of the tory party because they thought a woman would attract female votes at a time when they were really desperate to get back in power.
2. Callaghan's Labour had no idea and the country was going down the pan.
3. Some people will vote for change just for the sake of it. In 1979 lots of people did that (because of 2 above)
4. She stayed in power because (a) her cabinet were too scared to challenge her, (b) Labour were clueless until John Smith took over, (c) John Smith - the only credible alternative at the time - died.
To say her 'removal' from power was glorious would be an understatement.

Quite a few people on twitter saying the next time there will be celebrations like this will be for Thatcher's death.
I guess only those who lived through Thatcher's premiership (as adults or teenagers) can truly comment on what it was like. What I'll never understand is why some people will celebrate her death as some kind of victory. Wouldn't that be rather a hollow victory? She's had a long life will probably die of natural causes. Can't see much to gloat about unless you're expecting immortality soon afterwards.
What I do know is the phrase "sick man of europe" was a nickname she eradicated. More than the Windsors have ever done for the country I would suggest. What were they doing during the winter of discontent throwing a parade?
