How is it fair to Verstappen and Red Bull? Invalidate the entire race result. If the result is invalidated the race itself and all placements are also scrapped.
Why should it be fair to Verstappen, full stop?
Hamilton had already done his own work by overtaking the four cars between him and Verstappen.
Where do you draw the line of fairness, if you want to then cite the rules, which also allowed Max to put on a new pair of shoes?
The rules are then conveniently disregarded on the resumption, thus, even giving Verstappen the chance to take full advantage.
We only have to go back a week when Verstappen was found guilty after the race and handed a ten second race penalty for deliberately taking the piss on the brakes.
Funny how that ten second race penalty had no bearing on the championship going in to today's race.
It's contrived bollocks, contrived to keep Verstappen in the equation after a few weeks where Lewis has driven the tits off him.

Well said. This is absolutely the point Mercedes will be making. This is rule 48.12. I have read it and re-read it, and there is complete clarity in what is states. There is no wriggle room. Of course if this is the case, it remains to be seen what the remedy might be, given that neither driver did anything wrong.
Max and RBR did nothing wrong but under the rules, they simply do not win the race and that is that.
The winner is Lewis and he is/should be world champion.
The outcome should impose the rules.

but Williams have Red Bull's Albon next year...The driver who crashed was driving a car with a Mercedes engine who are a feeder team for the Mercedes FI team. I don't think Latifi did his future prospects any good today.

Only easy solution I see is if Max did pass Lewis under the safety then a 5/10 second penalty would bring a fair conclusion (Hamilton wins).
Like you say though, bar the illegitimate ending we've been given, no other legitimate ending gives it Red Bull.
Maybe that's why Mercedes included it.
They wanted to give the FIA a way out where they can blame RB and without deciding the safety car nonsense.

I think the rules already state that if the race ending is fucked up, it get counted back to who was leading when the race reached enough laps to finish - which would give Lewis the title.
Thats why its so bad, there is no equivalent of last week giving Max 10 seconds so he still finishes second and nothing changes.
There is no "yes we fucked up but this is the solution from the rules and max still wins".
they have to over turn the result to save the sport and its nothing to do with lewis or max
a major bollock was dropped by the FIA and the mistake is reversible because its the been done before
they have a choice to make and agree on ? give lewis the race and demote max to 2nd then call lewis champion
or give go down the route of everybody calling it cheating and fans and sponsors pull out
