FA confirm Southgate will stay on until after Euro 2024 (p 101)

England have a player who every club side in Europe would give their right hand for.
However this lad needs creative midfielders to make space for him. He is not so effective with his back to goal hugging the left hand touch line trying to win headers from Slabhead.
The other option was to put him as a midfield spearhead, bring in Jack and drop one of the two holding midfielders.
Instead you had Henderson playing right wing with Saka.
It’s not about armchair tactical genius more the f**king obvious.
PMA would have won that game- have a word with Ben Stokes.

Exactly. That’s what I was saying about France’s 4-2-3-1 being perfect for England. They pretty much laid the blueprint on how we should be setting up. Not because they beat us but it just gets the best out of their players. Get Foden doing was Griezmann does for them, basically a free role but in that 10 position, letting him drift around. then either side of him you have any two of Saka or Rashford or Grealish or whoever is playing well,

Then your 2 midfielders behind those three, Kane up top.

"He's unified the squad and is a good man manager. Managed to get them to a final & semi-final of major international competitions and has them up there in FIFA's world rankings."

He's also managed to get relegated from the top tier of the Nations League.

For those that want to continue with Southgate then I would say it's comparable to Belgium sticking with Roberto Martinez while their golden generation withered into old age.

If not Southgate, I suppose the question would be who?

Theres no doubt we have the talent pool to do really, really well at these international tournaments, but just like any other knockout comp, the element of luck plays a huge part. Personally, I think Eddie Howe would get a tune out of this lot. I joked about it earlier in the thread and the geordies would never let it happen, but I reckon he would be a good call if we were to stay with an Englishman.

Why are people suddenly pretending that the Nations League is vitally important? All I remember during the summer was people here complaining that it was a waste of time after a long season, and the matches were just glorified friendlies. Personally, I think it's just another excuse for the Southgate outers to have a pop at him. In any case, was relegation from the top of the Nations League really a terrible thing? Look at England's qualifying group for the Euros:
  • Italy
  • England
  • Ukraine
  • North Macedonia
  • Malta
That's 2 teams England should beat easily (North Macedonia and Malta), one which looks beatable on paper (Ukraine) and one tough one (Italy). Would you prefer a group with San Marino, Moldova and Montenegro for what feels like the milliionth time? The standard complaint was that England did poorly at tournaments because they had it too easy in the qualifiers - that thumping 10 goals past a hapless San Marino was poor preparation for playing stronger teams in the knockout rounds. Therefore, if a qualifying group is more of a challenge, then it should provide better preparation for the knockout stages. It's not beyond England to qualify from that group - it may well come down to how the two games with Italy pan out.

Presume Southgate's leaving the post will coincide with when Newcastle's owners install a 'marquee' global-name manager and Howe leaves The Toon with a handshake and a nice golden goodbye.
Who might this marquee global name manager be ?

I think the future is 433 with Foden and Bellingham in midfield with a sitting midfielder. I think it will be Phillips when he gets up to speed at City, but it could also be Rice.

Don’t get the love in with Potter. Did an ok job at Swansea and Brighton but looking suspiciously like he might be out of his depth as soon as he got the chance to work with top players.
Don't think it's anything to do with calibre of players. He's been at Chelsea for 5 minutes in comparison to the other two. Give the guy a chance.

Brendan Rodgers? He’s not a bad coach. Likes to play open football. As you say, apart from Howe or Potter it’s a seriously small list of potential candidates

It's not like you cared when he beat Germany in Spain in the nations league. Then they were glorified friendlies, but now we're missing those games it's a travesty.
...and yet his third-place finish in 2019 in that very tournament has been hailed on here by his fans in the credit column in his long list of "achievements"

I'm not hunting them down for you, I've seen them and so have you if you have been following - various posters have cited that final, semi final and third-place in the NL to pad out his list of achievements - all of which were losses

I think we'll always fall short with Southgate. He is great at squad unity but not so much at the tactics part and is way too cautious in approach. I'm all for getting rid of him, however, i dont think its wise to dump him until we have a good replacement and I dont see one at the moment. Ideally we stay with an English coach and I dont know enough outside of Howe and Potter to call for any.
The FA should stick with Southgate for now and create committee to have a look at the best English coaches. Look at style. Do the FA have a technical director? I thought they hired a Belgian who oversaw their transition from the dark days?
Anyway, Southgate out - but not unitil we have a replacement. Fuck knows who
