We was in a final couple years ago, the moan brigade was well out in force that day.

‘We only got here because of an easy run’ etc
 
I see him as being a bit like Roberto Martinez. Nice chap but a bit lacking when it comes to being a top level manager and I suspect he will end up wasting a very good crop of players.

It's not just about winning trophies for me though. A good manager should be able to get the team to perform to a level above the sum of its parts and I just don't see that with him. The Moroccan and Croatian managers may never win a trophy but I can't help but feel they are overachieving with their teams. I think the opposite is the case with Southgate.

England at present seem to be stuck in a cycle of being able to beat weaker teams but then failing when they come up against teams of a similar level to themselves.

Anyway, we'll see over the course of the next couple of years. Maybe something will click.

This one sums it up the best.

Even if Southgate won the World Cup there'd still be people complaining he didn't do in the right manner or other such reasons.

The impossible job.
 
I keep hearing he’s the best since 66 but I put him behind Venables & Hoddle in recent times who only lost the job for non-footballing matters.

Exactly. As soon as we come up against the likes of Hungary or the US we fall short…

One of the main reasons we did get there was because of an easy run because every time he’s come up against a half decent team he’s lost.

We were even a better side than who we faced in the final yet our tactics were utterly pathetic after going 1-0 up and we spunked that final due to him and his lack of ambition to win.
 
This fraud gets paid to watch the best English players playing in the best league in the world. When I used to coach basketball I used to watch all the pro games I could to get tips and tricks to teach my teams, it is how you improve as a coach. I don't see waistcoat doing any of that. I don't see any of the ways we play in the PL getting onto the field when England play. All we see is a team of some of the best players in the world being wasted.

We have such talented players being wasted on a talentless manager.
 
You'll lose again in the euros if you come up against a decent team, he's out of his depth tactically. Got out thought by France same with Italy in the final couldn't adjust to both managers changes and failed.

See Southgate England fans bringing up the Germany win, but Germany are not the Germany of old, their manager was a laughing stock in German press during that tournament.

Shame, seems your going the Belgian route first time I thought you could win a few trophies as the squad you've got is amazing.

Potter might be a choice. I'd still say no though. The players have played better for Southgate, they seem to work hard for him and obviously it's turned around for the better since Hodgson.

I think southgate got a two year extension so maybe in two years there would be someone better available, besides pep :)

So would you accept pep haha

Comparing Argentina and their record with ours is futile.

The Argentine f.a seem to have no issue in getting suitable managers for their teams.
If they don't perform,they are dispensed with.

Loser mentality has afflicted us for years.

I think it’s less a loser mentality and more a “making the knockout stages is enough” mentality.

For some, consistently leading the team with arguably the collection of highest overall quality in the world (nearly all playing in arguably the most competitive league in the world) to ‘nearly winners’ status is deemed success.

Is it considered such in Germany, France, Spain, Argentina, or Brazil?

Absolutely not.

In those teams, winning tournaments is the measure of success. Which is why they have all recently won major tournaments and we’ve reached one final under Southgate (and haven’t won a major tournament in more than 50 years), whilst going out earlier in every other tournament or being relegated from the one longer format competition we play in. That alone would be enough to get sacked in the other teams, but with the FA, that is a sign of “progress”.

Until the perimeters of “success” are realigned with the other best national teams in the world, we’ll continue to be also-rans, and many will happily clap as we collect our “nearly winners” ribbons.
