I agree too. But I also don't really see the argument here. Some people seem to be suggesting that we wouldn't be looking at him if he wasn't English, therefore we shouldn't bother. But that's the whole point of the homegrown rule. We have to look at homegrown players. It's irrelevant whether we would buy a Spanish Delph. The only question is whether there are any homegrown players we could buy that would be more likely to add to our squad, and what sort of money they would cost.

Off the top of my head, these are the players we've got to choose from, who would be available, vaguely decent and probably (possibly) willing to come: Delph, Schneiderlin, Wilshere, Berhino, Austin, Clyne, Stones, Rose, Kane, Barkley, Grealish and of course Sterling. Of those, only Sterling and Wilshere would be automatic starters when fit imo. Schneiderlin and Delph would probably get a rotation role to start with. The rest would either be backup or talented youngsters who have to settle for cameos from the bench initially. The club seems to be going for the policy of trying to get the players that would start, but if one of the others becomes available for cheap in a position that we need cover in, then it's definitely worth a shot. The reality is that if we buy no homegrown players, we start the season with a squad of 19 plus the EDS. Which simply isn't enough to compete in 4 competitions.

You make some excellent points mate!;)...I just hate having to buy "lesser" talent just because they are HG.....he would make a solid squad player but clearly there is better options in Europe than Delph, if we wanted to upgrade the midfield...which it what I meant by saying we wouldn't even be going after him unless he was HG..Don't have an issue with us buying him tho...as long as Pogba already holding up his City shirt;) thanks again for your comments!

So is Townsend, Phil Beckenbaur Jones and Henderson. Being an England starter isn't an indication of high quality like it used to be.

Fair points, I'm Irish so can't real comment on the shitness of International players. But I think Delph is half decent and could develop playing with a higher standard of player on a day to day basis.

You said it, not me! Still think he is the best of a bad bunch of attainable English players we can go for. What other options do we have, are we a bit snookered here?
I don't mind Delph as much as some on here and if the low release clause is correct he'd be something of a bargain but I do wonder why we're apparently not interested in Schneiderlin who also qualifies as HG and is a better player IMO.

It's no good people moaning that there are "better players in Europe" - tough, we already have a full quota of non-HG players for the CL A-list so any non-HG additions have to be one in, one out. We need at least two Association-trained players coming in as we have no over-21 club-trained players for the A-list now that Boyata has left. This lack of over-21 club-trained players is another reason why Lopes and one of Denayer/Rekik surely have to be retained at the club in the coming season rather than going on loan.

Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph could end up joining Manchester City... for just £8m
England international could may leave for as little as £8 million despite signing new four-and-a-half year deal in January

Fabian Delph can leave Aston Villa for just £8 million this summer after the club agreed a remarkable release clause in his new contract.

Villa are facing the prospect of losing Delph for a minimal fee withManchester City understood to be stepping up their interest in the England international.

Delph signed a four-and-a-half year deal in January, with his previous contract running out at the end of the season, but there was a clause inserted that allows interested clubs to take him for an surprisingly low price ahead of the next campaign. The clause is understood to only apply to teams competing in European competition.

The midfielder is on City's list of targets while he could now be added to other Premier League clubs' priorities after nailing down a regular place in Roy Hodgson's England squad.
It is believed that Delph agreed the compromise with Villa chairman Randy Lerner during negotiations over his new contract, with both parties accepting a humble buy-out clause.

Lerner is expected to sever his ties with Villa this summer, with a party being granted an exclusivity agreement, and Delph could also depart before the new Premier League season.
Tim Sherwood, the Villa manager, is working on new signings and considering a £7m bid for Feyenoord playmaker Jordy Clasie.

Southampton are also targeting Clasie, 24, but Sherwood is ‎preparing an offer for the Holland international.

Villa have signed former Manchester City defender Micah Richards on a free transfer so far since the end of last season.

This lad is outstanding value at 8-10m and at 25 coming to the peak of his playing years, probably won't start but great to come on for the last 20 to shut a game down, loves a tackle and has got stamina to burn
