The short answer is they were just a little bit crap.

Fookin awful handling. The front end roll was pronounced despite an anti-roll bar, and the rear leaf-spring setup was shite at the best of times. Rear shockers never lasted more than 10000 miles before they started to fail.

MX-5 is where it's at in term of fun for your money. Superb handling and responsive engines. You just have to get over the hairdresser image issue.

Not much room inside for that, unless you were posh and had a sunroof.

Triumph Spitfire. Bit of a rust bucket, but a fun affordable 2 seater.

Loved my Spitfire , I had a white markIV in the summer of 76, never had to put the roof up.i had lots of much more expensive makes since but that car will always be my favourit.

Alfa Romeo 147 GTA, putting 250 bhp in a hatch back that was front wheel drive over 20 odd years ago was a silly idea. But bloody hell it was fun.

That was the summer I have my Mk3 white with wire wheels. Living in Cornwall at the time. As you say didn’t put the roof up for weeks. What a summer!
