So far he's had the benefit of the surprise factor. From now on if he plays fullback, particularly left back, he will be targeted. Its an accident waiting to happen.

Targeted how? What exactly do you think they're going to do? He's fast, he reads the game, he's physical and he's probably our best defender.

Overall he played very well on Monday. But there were a couple of times when Ibe went past him as if he wasnt there. Partly because he got his body position wrong, partly because he hesitated over whether to tackle with his right or left foot. It would take him many, many games to get comfortable in that role. Its why Clichy has looked very uncomfortable when played on the right, despite being born right footed. Its why when Zabaleta has played on the left he's looked half the player, always trying to force the attacker inside so that he can tackle with his right foot. And Fernandhino would face far better attackers than Ibe.

Apart from which, it seems that the main reason for playing him at full back is so that Yaya can continue as the single pivot. Overall that's worked well so far, but much less so when teams have pressured him. Yaya as the pivot and Fernandhino as left back provides our opponents with two very obvious options for applying pressure.

Sorry but your last 2 sentences are complete rubbish. Yaya has been at his best when teams have tried to pressure us on the ball because he's still one of the best possession players around. He single handedly ruined Spurs' attempts at pressing because Dembele and Alli tried to harry and hustle him, but he just held them off and found a pass as he always does, and when they went after other players, he was always open to receive under pressure and move it along.

He's the reason why teams pressing us isn't causing the damage it did in September/October. If teams are going to try and put pressure on Yaya, Pep will be laughing his head off because it's his bread and butter, and if they're going to dedicate enough players to pressing him to the point where he's in trouble - like Eddie Howe did - then the CB's will pass straight to Silva or KDB who will be in acres of space and look how that turned out.

Fernandinho may not be a natural LB, but he's already better than Kolarov, who's vulnerable to anyone half quick, and Clichy who has cost us about 6 points single-handedly with his awful concentration and positioning, and very weak defending even when he's in the right place at the right time.

Quite. I would have more confidence in him being targeted than Kolarov or Clichy.

Bloody tough old night for the man. Felt sorry for him, nothing was going right for him at one point.

He's just not a LB. I think Pep desperately wants to fit Silva, Yaya, Kev and Dinho into the same team but that can't come at the expense of the defence.

Who would you have played left back last night?

Hard to judge him on last night as he was asked to play the inverted fb role against a very good team, but I think we should leave him there against some smaller teams to get used to it.

Pains me to say it, but Yaya has done a Micah/Boateng and beaten Fernandinho out of the starting midfield based on form. He should not be in the first 11 in a midfield position right now based on how good everyone else is playing together.
