Fernandinho - 2018/19 Performances

Without wishing to underplay the importance of Fernandinho, he played in all our defeats last season, he played against Lyon in both games this season and against Chelsea. It’s more the cumulative effect of losing top players together that has undermined us a little, not just losing Fernandinho.
Equally, conceding 2 unrepeatable strikes, a very, very good one (Palace first goal), giving away an unnecessary penalty and missing a few chances have also combined these last couple of weeks as well.

Our squad is very deep - we can and have withstood the loss of top players.

The major problem currently is that our squad as a whole, has lost the drive/desire/commitment to win at all cost.

Pep's system is physically and mentally demanding. You must be switched on at all times - moving into open positions on offense, never (or hardly ever) turning the ball over and thus aware at all times of what is around you - quick-thinking - able to play the ball forward quickly.

And when the ball turns over - being in the correct position to press - and immediately able to cut off passing lanes if the ball turns over to a man whom you cannot immediately press.
===
In particular it's this later problem - lack of commitment/drive to press when the ball turns over that's killing us.

That said, a skillful DM with the gift of breaking up plays - such as Fernandinho - is an extremely valuable asset. We can cope without him - but if he's present in our side, we're all the better for it. Currently, a like-for-like replacement for Fernandinho is unavailable - and coupled with a drop in motivation - we're currently suffering.
===
Pep will fix the motivation issue. And I think we'll get a backup/replacement for Fernandinho in the summer window.

Whatever happens,we need to keep him on the staff when he retires. This man has the position he plays mastered and his intelligence, mentality and ability needs to be passed on to our academy.

Him, Dave and Kev in training this week..

Don't care what anyone else says, for me he's gonna go down in the same legend bracket as Merl, Kun, and Vin when he finishes with us.

Called it 3 years ago.....underrated then...now scarily irreplaceable...
Scouting department has to come good because I can’t rhink of anyone?? .

We simply have to buy the best possible option in the market who is also willing to join us. No fucking about with prices and then alternatives. This is the position where the executives need to bite the bullet and just pay the price.

He has a very unique skill set. That's what makes him the player he is and so damn hard to replace.

Fast
Agile
Physical
Ball winner
Good in the air
Plays on the half turn and looks to play forward
Positional sense
Intelligent
Big engine
Leader
Composed
Relatively injury free

Other players have a lot of limitations. They're either much weaker offensively, or much weaker defensively.

Sure, they may be stronger in one or more facets of the game than he is, but Fernandinho just has so many different bases covered. He's the type of player that any club could build a quality side around.
Exactly mate, I said it when it first joined after watching him for Shaktar v Chelsea. He had the exact skills we needed to inject into our midfield alongside Yaya and move away from Barry and De Jong etc.

Years on and he is now our lynchpin, I honestly can’t see another player with the same ability out there. His body shape and nous allow some him to just nip in and win the ball back at the last second or manoeuvre his body in such a way he can get the ball off a player and get the ball away.

Masterclass performance by Dhino today and showed how much we missed him against Palace and Leicester.

Criminally under-rated by the media and click-monkeys .
And our own fan base.

We all know he’s good. But he should be held in the same regard as Kompany, Yaya, Silva and Kun as instrumental players towards winning titles and he isn’t really.

Apart from ‘good in the air’ sounds a lot like Kante to me !

Really thought we should’ve gone in big for him when we had the chance and that Chelsea got him for a steal.

Not sure of many Midfielders around who have most of the attributes above that we can buy ready made. Maybe an apportunity to bring someone young in or from the Academy to work with Fernandinho and develop for the next couple of seasons?
