Surely he could play at DM for a match or 2 if need be (maybe not vs strong sides)
but we have seen in past years that he can't go DM intensity over a season anymore. No rocket science, at his age.

Great decision to use his midfield skills, experience and attitude at CB.
Surely he will stay a bit longer.

But look what it tells about Stones and Ota that (without Laporte) Fern is our best CB...

True , we have Otto,Garcia,Stones,Laporte,Dinho as options and Dinho and Laporte are the two most trusted , Otto is showing his age , Garcia has great potential , but Stones has been a major disappointment , he is on a par with Mangala.

I don't know what gives you this impression. Rodri is clearly the preferred option at DM.

I'd bet you a thousand bucks he'd still be #1 when Laporte returns. But it won't matter, as Dihno will be the #2 CB anyways. So he'd still start many games. But I'd be shocked if he starts more than 2 games as a pure DM barring injury to Rodri.

The impression is Dinho has not been available for selection in midfield , Rodri only plays because Dinho is required at centre back , and our defensive frailities are not just down to Laporte , we have missed Dinho's tenacity in midfield , Rodri is a decent player but isnt at Dinho's level at the moment , but he will get there under Pep.
When all our centre backs are fit , Stones/Laporte would have to be given another chance they have done well together previously , or even Garcia/Laporte , because Dinho's natural position is midfield and he is still one of the best in europe in that position

I think Rodri will still be first choice DM.

Dinho will continue to be used as a CB. Given the way he is actually improving as a CB, he may be Laporte's main partner for the rest of the season.

However, whatever happens, Dinho is not the future in any position, which doesn't mean he won't be part of the squad for another season or three.

Stones or Garcia should be the future centre back alongside Laporte , Garcia is inexperienced at the moment , and Stones's confidence is non existent , but Stones and Laporte have been good previously so that pairing needs another chance , Stones hasnt turned into another Mangala , but unless he gets his act together , that is where he is heading , its a make or break few months for him.

The question is would Dinho benefit the team in defensive midfield or would there be more benefit leaving Dinho at centre back alongside a returning Laporte ? Rodri is a decent player and could play alongside Dinho in midfield when we need a more cautious approach , i.e. Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

It's been said time and time again, from journalists, Pep, and Dinho himself, that the plan since the end of last season was for him to be a CB and for Rodri and Gundo to be the two DMs.

The CB partnership will be Laporte and Dinho, unless Dinho gets injured/tired and/or one of the other CBs finds form.

It says a lot about just how good Dinho is that he can easily slot in at CB and become the 2nd best defender at the club.

Sadly, it also says a lot about the quality of Stones and Otamendi as well.

That said, Dinho is up there with Aguero, Yaya and Silva as the best City players of our generation.

He was pretty much the first name on the team sheet in defensive mid and was the most reliable player in the team... he’s now made himself pretty much the first name on the team sheet at centre half and is the most reliable player in the team there now n’all.

He’ll be first choice for centre half when Laporte returns and that’ll be the #1 partnership.

He will because Pep has said he's a CB now, he'll play WITH Laporte.

Never heard Pep say Dinho is going to play alongside Laporte at centre back , but recently he has been playing three at the back Rodri,Dinho and Otto which gives the opportunity for Rodri or Dinho to step into midfield when required ,there's more chance of predicting the lottery numbers than Pep's formation / tactics , but he rarely gets it wrong.
