Fernandinho

Reminds me of Ramires in certain aspects. BUT if we're not willing to pay £50M for Cavani or Falcao and still splash £30M on Fernandinho, I do believe we have someone who will prove to be very special.

I didn't think he was poor per se against Cardiff, he hardly did anything wrong.

I thought he shirked responsibility and stood behind opposition players too much instead of making himself a passing outlet.

That was my only complaint really.
He was bypassed a couple of times without making any real attempt to chase back. His passing was also way off. That said he wasn't alone, he was let down by YaYa.
Shirking responsibility in an away game, especially when playing in a midfield that needed to help their makeshift back four is poor in my book.
I certainly won't be rushing to judge him right now though. Reading a lot of opinions from people who've seen a lot more of him than me, the general consensus seems to be he's got what it takes to succeed here. As it stands he's had one good, one not so good game. I'm not expecting to learn a great deal from him if he starts against Hull but I will be interested in how he gets on against Stoke.

This. Give the lad time.

Whilst I can understand the sentiment of this view, the harsh reality of the premier league is that there is no time for players to 'settle'. Every game is potentially vital and the team just can't afford to carry players who need time to acclimatise or whatever - it's not a dress rehearsal. Players either have the ability to perform well at this level or they don't.

Fernandinho needs to be better. He can't have 6 or 7 matches like he did against Cardiff to see if he improves. Either he steps up on Saturday or he drops down the order. I'm not by any means saying he should be written off, but we have Milner and Barry who, on the evidence so far, can do a better job. Fernandinho cannot be first choice for the position if he isn't the best available. In league matches, performance has to matter more than potential.

Evidence so far?

He was one of the best players on the pitch against Newcastle. He was no worse than Yaya against Cardiff and tried hard to cover Yaya's defensive laziness.

And his performance against Cardiff didn't even begin to touch the shambolic Barry performance against Southampton in a similar style fixture last season where he was so bad, there were actually posts on here questioning whether he did it on purpose because of the Mancini/player problems.

Fernandinho is a better midfielder than Barry and Milner and has done it against rival midfielders neither could handle such as Dortmund's and Juventus'.

Yes there is. Silva was given time to settle, as was Yaya, as was De Gea, as was Ramires, as were many more who didn't look great when they settled in. As someone has said, footballers are not robots and adjustment periods are allowed and even acknowledged by many managers as a necessity.

Fernandinho is in another league to Barry and Milner, he completely dominated Chelsea in the CL last year.

Give him a chance

I am giving him a chance. But I do question whether his chance should be as a first choice player if his performances don't merit that.

He was hardly the worst player on the pitch last Sunday and as LoveCity said Barry had some shambolic performances against similar opposition last season.

Barry had some brilliant performances too, as did Milner.

If Fernandinho starts against Hull, I hope he proves that he is the best we have in that position - i.e, better than Barry or Milner are capable of. If he doesn't do that, then he shouldn't continue to be first choice.

The Shakhtar performance is the benchmark of what we expected but Sunday was full of misplaced passes.

Brazil squad for 2014? well he better buck his ideas up.

I actually think he is a hell of a player let's just hope the Cardiff game was an off day.

There's no such thing as an off day when you've only played TWO, YES TWO fooking matches for a new team, in a new country with no one in the team who really even knows you!!!!!!

Comments like this wind the shite out of me.......is this what we've become, set of soft whinging gits, hang your head in shame. Either back new players who have real talent or buy yourself a red shirt and sell your soul.....tut!!!!!

What's actually absurd is arguing that a player who is not the best available option should automatically start every game.

Why? Because he cost a lot of money and is quite new? Ridiculous.

All 4 signings should have been eased inyo premiership football 30 mins in the first 4 games it is not as if wr have not hot the players to cover them till the first real challenge againsg the rags I can honestly say I don, t think ee would have lost at cardiff with milner in for navas and either barry or rodwell in for fernandinho not blamming them 2 plsyers but it must have been a bit ov a shock for them.

Is he trying to tell us something or looking for ideas? :)
