Fernandinho

Only Kroos made as many successful tackles tonight so in a sense he did part of his job... but it was 5 against 2. Fernandinho was average but not nearly the worst form of mediocrity in our team tonight. Oddly enough he touched the ball more than Yaya, who is usually the player everything goes through but couldn't get in the game tonight.

... because we couldn't get the ball.

Anyone who's ever played in a midfield that's outnumbered should realize how hard it is to deal with. If the other team's half decent at passing the ball you just can't get near it and end up running around looking like an idiot, completely unable to get into the game. Same goes for playing in defence without enough midfielders in front of you - the other team streams forward in numbers and there's no way you can pick everyone up, so you have to start guessing and can look like you don't have a clue. If we want the luxury of out-and-out wide men and two strikers, we'd better get use to the mids and defenders apparently underperforming on a regular basis.

Nice assist for their third. Absolute criminal mistake for a defensive midfielder
Or if our keeper didn't let another fuckin pea-roller in at the near post,it wouldn't have looked so bad !

Barry - Napoli? Rodwell - Dortmund? Now THAT'S criminal.

I appreciate him for actually having the impetus to try and take the match by the scruff of the neck despite being outnumbered. A punished mistake we learn from. I don't blame his unsuccessful dribble to avoid the pressure on the tactics, but if he had more passing outlets from the little formation tweak we were crying out for........

Yes both of those crucial mistakes were awful for a holding midfielder to make, I don't recall the club paying 34 million pounds for Jack Rodwell however

-- Thu Oct 03, 2013 6:56 am --

the "formation tweak" had very little to do with our goal or possession in the final 10 minutes, Bayern had simply called it in early

People bang on about the fee but it's not the players fault we criminally overpaid for him. Ridiculous transfer fee but can't blame the player for that.

Don't think he played particularly badly last night and don't blame him too much for the third goal- he'd been under pressure all game and with few or no options yet again tried to drive us forward. Put it this way, if he had a decent option or two we adn't been panned all game then I don't think he would have made the decision to carry that ball where he did

Agree on the price especially when I see we use him so much differently than he was used at Sahtar. Its like we find a good player playing in great form like Ramsay at Arsenal and we opt to sign him. And then play him as a holding midfielder.

Of course Fernandinho has nothing to do how much we spent on him it was the simple decision of Txiki just like Navas who said negotiating was going on for months way before Pellegrini was appointed.

Fernandinho is a great box to box player we decided to use him a holding midfielder behind Yaya. But with this we lose many great aspects of his skills.
There were questions when he played little bit further up but Yaya was deeper with that we lost great attacking skills of Yaya.

This is simply not a great duo both would be lot better with a real good destroyer behind them. Or in a trio of De Jong, Fernandinho, Yaya, wow that would be hell of a midfield for us.

Not being a great duo they still can form a very good duo that will be good enough in most PL matches. Fernandinho is a great player he will get used to the team more and to the league more so there is more to come from him. Not a 30m player, but we overpaid for some reasons, apart from this he will be a good and important part of the team.

Big question for me is still that was this the real idea to play Yaya-Fernandinho as a duo because not just Bayern overrun us in the middle, any team that packs the midfield could do it.

Arsenal, Chelsea, spurs will put men to the middle you can bet your life on it, and not many top teams will be as naive to have two wingers against us not tracking back (like Mu in the derby).

It wont be enough if Nasri or Silva comes in from the left sometimes to help outin the middle. its lazy to think that...

Our back up in midfield is poor but we have to shore this area up now starting against Everton who are almost certain to play 5 in the middle.

still managing to lose the ball when we're high up the pitch, giving up two dangerous counter attacks today. Shrugged off the ball too easily at times

On the flip,he has a fantastic engine, breaks up numerous attacks, has a great passing range and gives nothing less than his best.

He is absolutely brilliant and getting better with every game. He has a great passing range, starts attacks off, closes down quickly etc. We do need another quality midfielder though to go alongside him and Yaya to make us more solid against teams like Bayern and on the road, perhaps Rodwell could be that man if he gets fit.
