Watching the Porto game earlier,he is slightly inferior Fernandinho - perfect!
He looks a bit more solid than our Fern.

I don't think Fernandinho is a holding midfielder, he is more of a lung-buster who can do the sweeping up duties very well but he also likes to get forward, find the pass, and pop up around the box now and then.

When Scolari tried him in a holding position for Brazil the other week he looked uncomfortable, it was only when he took Paulinho off at HT and put Ferny in his position playing a more complete midfield role and then putting Gustavo into the holding position he looked like a worthy player in that Brazil team.

Many were wanting to see if Fernandinho could rival Gustavo for the holding role instead of Lucas Leiva, now after the South Africa match most are saying he could take over Hernanes for the deputy of Paulinho's role of complete central midfielder.

In my opinion this is why we went for Fernando in January, a player who would maybe more disciplined to just sit in front of the back two and not go roaming off like Yaya and Fernandinho do.

I meant heavier... But yeah, I agree with all of that.

Just got himself sent off at the end of the Porto-Sporting game. Got frustrated that they were losing and shoulder barged someone to the floor, a bit harsh but pretty stupid. Porto are now royally fucked, almost definitely missing out on automatic qualification for the CL next year and will need to sell

What do you reckon, should City go for Fernando or Carvalho? United want Carvalho, but recently Portuguese press said City are now watching him too. Seems an immense talent for his age.

Carvalho absolutely bossed it today, he really is going to be an absolute powerhouse, but his price is going to be huge. Sporting massively cut their costs last season and have ended up getting CL football for the first time in a fair while, so they are going to be not at all short for cash. He will be a huge player for whoever dares stump up the massive amount he will cost. I imagine Sporting will let him tear up the WC, then sell him to the highest bidder.

It depends what we want. If we just want a guy to play a squad role and essentially do what Fernandinho does for us at the moment, then Fernando will easily suffice, but if we want a player to potentially be a main part of our midfield for the forseeable future, then you'd go Carvalho. Really just depends how much money we are willing to spend

Not much difference between automatic qualification and entering the qualifying rounds for a team as good as Porto is there?

Potentially, yes. They'll get seeded, but you can still end up with a very unpleasant tie. It's a huge gamble, so they might have to hedge their bets

We have 2 options for central midfield. Fernanado and Carvalho

If we choose Carvalho, there will be no way to see Emry Huws on the pitch and contract with Huws will be up in the air then.

A taller Nigel de Jong, and we all know how much we loved that man!

He'd be perfect for us. He can give the centre halves protection and allow other midfielders to get forward and not have to worry so much about getting back.

A 4-1-2-3 formation could be implemented with him.

I stand by the above comment.

The game last night showed he is much more than a defensive player, his assist for their first goal was superb.
