Sunday Mirror: City's double bid to sign Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala (23) and midfielder Fernando (26) is at an advanced stage.

Yeah but it was at an advanced stage in January to.

Its not unfathomable to think that's when both deals were 'agreed'.

If that were the case, why did Porto sign Fernando onto a new contract in February? Even if it were a stalling move, why a three year deal instead of 12 months?

A deal between the clubs could be agreed but there could also be a disagreement between City and the players themselves over contracts, in which case it could be both agreed yet still open to negotiation, in which case everyone here is correct.

True, but if City had agreed the deal with Porto then even if Fernando told City "up your offer or I'm out" then Porto offering Fernando a new deal would still be a massive breach of trust on the deal they had, because it jacks up the price City have to pay. If City and Porto genuinely had an agreement, then one of the very first clauses that City should have insisted on is that if Porto offer any new contract to Fernando then the deal is off and Porto have to pay a fine for breaching the agreed terms.

It could have been we could have forced the transfers in January at Mangala buyout of £40 mill and Fernando £15 mil. With Porto still in the Europa and challenging for Champion League place they would be desperate to hold onto them. They could have agreed if we backed off we could get both for around £40 mil in the summer.
If that was the case Fernando signing a new contract would protect both clubs from Fernando being out of contract at the end of the season and choosing the freedom to go where he wants for nothing thus ballsing the pre arranged deal up.
Just to say the above scenario is totally my own idea nothing to back any of it up.

Smart Manchester City have continued work on big transfer deal quietly

Manchester City, despite claims otherwise, kept up a mainly softly softly approach with Porto during the winter transfer window. It was no secret that they'd be pursuing Fernando but they didn't want to make that transfer at the expense of angering Porto and therefore blowing their place at the front of the queue for Eliaquim Mangala. Approaches by other clubs almost forced Manchester City's hand but a last minute double deal never took off.

Fernando wasn't thrilled with the situation and with his contract ending in June he refused to sign a new one, something Porto insisted was already a gentleman's agreement. Much fury went on in the Portuguese press and Porto told Fernando, publicly, that he'd be in the reserves unless he signed a deal. That he did, and everything was forgotten, ready to be played out again in the summer.

Manchester City, however, didn't rest. According to Thursday's copy of O Jogo the club have been respectfully trying to further a deal for both Mangala and Fernando for months. They want to head off any problems early and one of those is Mangala's ownership situation. Third party ownership isn't permitted in English football and therefore Manchester City would have to purchase around half of the player's rights separately.

Porto want to keep one of Mangala, Fernando or Jackson Martinez for next season and a double deal with Manchester City for the former two would perhaps be the best way to do it.

That's all well and good but I've seen him about 6 times and hes a De Jong clone even does the same spin in the centre circle before playing it across to the full back, we need someone nearer Fernandinho than nearer Garcia.

Portuguese league stats aren't recorded by most places, so you only end up with the stats from a couple of CL games unfortunately

Don't agree. We need someone who can sit in front of the defense like Garcia ...only better.
