Smart Manchester City have continued work on big transfer deal quietly
Manchester City, despite claims otherwise, kept up a mainly softly softly approach with Porto during the winter transfer window. It was no secret that they'd be pursuing Fernando but they didn't want to make that transfer at the expense of angering Porto and therefore blowing their place at the front of the queue for Eliaquim Mangala. Approaches by other clubs almost forced Manchester City's hand but a last minute double deal never took off.
Fernando wasn't thrilled with the situation and with his contract ending in June he refused to sign a new one, something Porto insisted was already a gentleman's agreement. Much fury went on in the Portuguese press and Porto told Fernando, publicly, that he'd be in the reserves unless he signed a deal. That he did, and everything was forgotten, ready to be played out again in the summer.
Manchester City, however, didn't rest. According to Thursday's copy of O Jogo the club have been respectfully trying to further a deal for both Mangala and Fernando for months. They want to head off any problems early and one of those is Mangala's ownership situation. Third party ownership isn't permitted in English football and therefore Manchester City would have to purchase around half of the player's rights separately.
Porto want to keep one of Mangala, Fernando or Jackson Martinez for next season and a double deal with Manchester City for the former two would perhaps be the best way to do it.
