Feyenoord (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Was at a gig last night because when I booked the tickets I thought this would be a throwaway game in a tournament that we'd essentially already qualified for lol

Watched the highlights this morning, dear me what a comedy of errors for those final two goals. Jamie Pollock own goal levels of shooting yourself in the foot.

Biggest concern for me currently is the confidence and psychology of the team. We are playing well in patches, and despite Rodri's absence, and despite some of the drama on here about transfer policy, this is a team full of world class, international footballers. We are dramatically underperforming and that is not down to skill. Their heads have gone, and they're getting rattled by goals, and there isn't a let-up for them now. There's a lot of football to play in the few months.

It was last season and the three seasons before that. It's not 10/20 years ago that people are referring to.

This team has done brilliantly and is having a dip this season. It happens.

What's shocking is people on here and elsewhere who seemingly can't deal with that and has turned on the team and the club at the first difficult period we've had in years.
To be fair I think most are in shock mainly because what you are calling a difficult period is really a complete collapse. We're experiencing an utterly embarrassing loss of all form. A manager who has mainly always had it go his way seems completely lost for answers and if anything is contributing to this debacle with all type of dubious decisions one would not expect from someone with his track record. For many this collapse (and that's what it is no matter what anyone chooses to call it)_was as unexpected as it's been shocking. The fact that there is no indication that the club they've known for the past decade plus will be returning any time soon has created a panic among many supporters.
Personally I think we're in big trouble in terms being a top club competing for big honors with zero assurances that we'll get back to that level any time soon if ever. I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic in recognizing we may be witnessing the end of an era. Again, all good things must come to an end but you can't necessarily blame our supporters for being in shock at the suddenness of this utterly shambolic collapse...JMO

That said anything derogatory anyone chooses to direct at me for giving my honest opinion will be a drop in the ocean compared to the pain I'm feeling watching this unfold. In the immortal words of Lord Tennyson "It's better to have dominated and lost then never to have dominated at all"...or something like that.

It's not that pal...Most of us here have loved the club through thick..thin...thickish...very thin...good,....fkin amazing...in my case of 50 years going. But it's the strange lack of squad planning - i accept we needed to temper big purchases - but a better squad plan would have helped - eased out players 30 plus or close..Laporte, Mahrez style...but bring in young y=hungry players and overlap for a season or two... it looks a mess now really
The media crying about Spurs being down to the bare bones against us when they had 45m Werner, 45m Johnson and 45m Archie Gray on the bench. Two of whom killed us.

To be honest and with respect I think you are trying to exorcise your worst fears rather than stating facts as to our future.
Yes the decline in our normal standards is relatively extreme but this bares nothing as to what our future holds.
Hang in there brother blue- it will get better.

What's odd is that I have a strong conviction that if we were in the old four team format, and we'd got to this stage, with say one other strong team with us, then two weaker teams, one of which would have been Feyenoord, we would have almost certainly beaten Feyenoord calmly and comfortably, knowing exactly what we had to do. Let's say we'd had Inter with us as the other strong candidate. We could have plausibly drawn at the Etihad against Inter (which we did, and which I would accept), needing to go to Milan to get, say, another draw or a win, and get a minimum of four points against each of the other two teams, and then very probably gone through.
The current format is a bit of a fool's paradise. But I'm still not sure that I've totally understood it.

What a couple of days, losing to Spursy and last night’s debacle, and sandwiched between that the redskins lose to Dallas, I can’t imagine getting gubbed by the dippers next weekend

I can't say there isn't something to what you say. When I say many of our supporters are in shock I'm including myself. Very, very few teams ever reach the heights we've reached. It's been otherworldly if I'm being honest. Being pragmatic I can't shake off what I'm witnessing and all the underlying causes...

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I genuinely appreciate it! Much respect.
