Except they didn't actually declare their support. They said they supported his right to a fair hearing. Nothing else.

Maybe I've watched too many old gangster films, but I wonder what the chances are of the FBI offering some kind of deal with Platini to blow the whistle on the whole revolting mess, and at the same time reveal useful details about the cartel operation behind FFP, which would be of interest to the European courts and m.Dupont in particular.
Wishful thinking maybe, but at least the discrediting of platini may result in the discrediting of his works and a more serious investigation of FFP by someone independent and not directly under the influence of uefa or any of the old G14 clubs, particularly in terms of any ..ahem.. "Inducements" of the monetary kind or otherwise which may -or may not - have been made.
