First job,first wage.

Mine was tele sales getting 3.50 an hour which I think was minimum wage. May have been 3.35. Some of my bonuses made me get close to 15 an hour which I loved!

Fast forward a year or two after that I turned lazy and want on the dole. They said after 6 months you either take our government schemed job or get thrown off. They paid me 70 pence an hour with my 35 quid a week dole money. I loved it as I was outside.

It took me over 20 years to replicate the wage of one of my first jobs

1979
Goods inwards assistant
T N Robinson on Daw Bank
£1500.00 PA or £28.85 per week for a 42 and a half hour week, so 68.5p per hour

We were paid monthly and the first few months I was taking home about £115 a month. Then the tax kicked in and it reduced to £106.
That £9 difference was two nights out

Sounds like a cushy number.

I washed out barrels of ink for £2 an hour. Loved the smell of it but it might have brained my damage. Also got electrocuted and didn't twig for about ten years, but that's another story.

In retrospect it was, but you don't appreciate it at the time. Once they'd trained me to put the springs, canvas and foam onto a bare frame, they put me on piecework and I was earning about £100 a week. I got too far ahead and the floor was full of foamed up frames waiting for the upholsters to finish, so they stuck me back on £30 a week and give me menial shit to do. I saw my arse and packed in. I was only 16 and didn't know my arse from my elbow, but it was a huge mistake to make and one which I regretted for years later.
