Flooding in Stockport

loads near me rammed to the top with soil..........Council does fuck all when told.
I Oldham you can go online and it shows you there are about 37000 drains to clean, they started in September 24 and are doing areas at a time I think they will reach us by December 25! Now whilst everyone’s needs doing there must be priorities, like others have said it doesn’t help with all the cars parked on them. Maybe a system where the day before someone goes round and outs a cone on each one it tells people to move their cars to allow cleaning but we all know selfish cunts out there just won’t move them.

The council used to go around with those drain unblocker trucks. I remember watching them as a kid. They still exist...they're just waiting for some TV programme to come along and restore them.
It all comes down to the public reporting block drains/gullies...then the council will ignore you for a bit until you complain to the main councillor. Then they'll send you a reply saying they will "look into it".
I know by experience.

Reminds me of the dutch boy sticking his dick in the dyke, clearing drains wont really help if the rivers are bursting their banks and streams are raging torrents.

I don't know what the solution is mate but I would hazard a guess that covering the grass with more concrete and building millions of houses isn't and wont be the answer.

The Tories spent 13 years decreasing the real-terms funding for councils. This is the effect.
That’s definitely partly to blame, but only part of the problem. Appalling planning decisions, developers greed and huge demand for housing from unprecedented population growth are big contributors too, especially the latter. We’ve been building on flood plains for thirty years and sadly under this Government that aspect is going to get worse.

Build a new estate with fancy drainage but that only links up with the old drains which then can’t take the extra so where does it go! By then the builders have fucked off just like the cladding crisis.

Local authorities have been far too quick to approve housing on flood plains. Why? They see income from rates and an increase in economic activity and also planning gain.
There is also pressure now to build loads of houses and speed up planning permission. We love ignoring the obvious pitfalls of choosing the easiest option.

Who is responsible for dredging rivers?
environment agency
from 2009 to 2020 their budget went from 170 million per year to 76 million per year, but i am sure that had absolutely no effect on their work.

Environmental Agency budget for 2024/2025 is just over 2 billion so hopefully things will improve

It is like when they come with the road sweeper and it has to slalom down the road to avoid all the parked vehicles.
Around our way when they do eventually come round its on a Sunday, presumably on double time but more importantly, when the most cars are parked on the street.
