He may have done but I don't think it was a chart topper, so despite his many many talents not Roy I'm afraid.
This is a very difficult one I think so a clue is that two other Number 1 artists have shared his surname.

I know for a fact that Gene Simmons from Kiss had a spell on loan at Stockport, whilst still technically under contract to Hamilton Academicals. Thing is, that was in season 61/62 and I've also just made it up. So, I'm probably not right, am I?

EDIT:

Was it Albert Camus?

Not Chubby Checker or the even more imaginative suggestion Gene Simmons. Remember the answer is a professional footballer with a long and distinguished playing career with Stockport County and (another clue here) Accrington Stanley. Not a goalkeeper either so that rules out Bert Camus as well as Chubby.

Wild guess time. In 1970 the England World cup squad got to number 1 with a song called "Back Home". Was one of Sir Alf's coaches a former player from the lower leagues or possibly Brian Labone, Everton captain who was one of the centre halfs in his thirties and along with Jackie Charlton the oldest in the squad ?
