For Man City Fan in Mississippi

EDIT----forgot to mention I'm from Rockville, MD. just outside DC. U tell me if that counts as southern or northern US cuz nobody here knows.

Hey Mississippi fan, welcome to bluemoon! As they say in 12 step meetings KEEP COMING BACK!

Congrats, you've won the lottery. I became a City fan (or as the Brits call it, a supporter) in a very similar way. I drew Man City out of a hat for a FIFA tournament with some buddies. This was quite a few years ago. It was long enough ago that I was upset because I had drawn one of the worst teams in the hat, which featured 12 teams from the Premier League. I am a huge fan of the band Oasis (big time City fans), and had been to one of their shows that past summer (2005 or 2006 maybe) so I was fine with playing as Man City. I won that FIFA tournament and City have been a huge part of my life ever since. I never miss a game, have a City jersey hanging above my bed, I cried watching the Aguero goal (multiple times), Yaya Toure is the background of my computer. I frickin learned Spanish (not all that well) so I could talk shit to the United/Chelsea/Bayern/Barca/Madrid fans in the kitchen of the restaurant I work at. I know one other City fan in my hometown, but that's fine, every time we see each other we talk City and have drinks. More blues will come. That much I can assure you. Especially with all the matches being shown live these days on non-satellite channels these days.

You're in for one hell of a ride. The Premier League has the passion/tradition of the SEC, the epic action of the NFL, and the superstars of the NBA. Its addicting. And the best part is the season runs from August to May. You'll find some things kind of weird during the first season or two...

-Why are there ties?
-WTF is offside?
-Why do teams fire their coaches so often?
-What is the away-goal aggregate rule?
-Why don't the best players play every match?
-Why the FUCK are they holding hands with little kids?
-Why doesn't the clock stop when the ball goes out of bounds?
-Why do they act like they're hurt when they didn't even get touched?
-Why doesn't the coach call a timeout?
-What is this strange transfer system? Why don't they just trade players and why no salary cap?
-How can the media just lie/make stuff up like that? Messi isn't transferring to Cardiff haha

In a few years you'll care 5 times more about Manchester City Football Club than you do the US men's national team.

If anyone calls you a glory hunter/plastic tell em to fuck off. Would I be such a huge fan if City hadn't been bought and became the best team in the UK, honestly...probably not. But I'd still support City and certainly wouldn't be supporting any other club.

I'm sure you've seen Harry Potter, the Sorting Hat has decided you and I are blues and it's our job to support the club now. Welcome.

Maryland is for sure the northern part of the U.S. I have a hard time considering anything north of Tennesee and South Carolina the "South," although Kentucky could make an argument. I guess I have been born and raised in the Deep South, so I am biased somewhat. And, as stated in my previous post, I have followed soccer for awhile, just not closely enough to know much inside information about a particular team. I got the rules down. Thanks for all the help though!

I'm an American fan as well, welcome!

One thing you MUST know as a City fan is what happened on the last day of the 2011/2012 season. This moment rivals "birth of first child" for greatest moment in the lives of City fans (and yes, it's just "City" not "Man City" btw.) There are many versions of the last minutes of this game floating around, all equally powerful in their own way. This version helps you appreciate what the team means to the fans, but there are plenty of versions just of the tv broadcast/commentary, or shot by fans in the stadium, that are wonderful to watch because what happened is incredible all on its own. I get chills every time, even two years later.

Enjoy.

Hey Mississippi,

Check out a movie called "Blue Moon Rising" if you can. It is from about 5 years back and follows a group of Mancs as they follow City during the course of a season. You'll get a whole lot of knowledge and info about the club from that alone I think. Good chants, some exposition as to the local rivalry with the rags, and just an overall immersion into the culture.

Sort of captures an odd time from our history too. Elements of the heartbreak many of us grew up with but the pieces starting to fall in place for what has developed now.

You could get it on itunes, apparently:

<a class="postlink" href="https://itunes.apple.com/ie/movie/blue-moon-rising/id423790330" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">https://itunes.apple.com/ie/movie/blue- ... d423790330</a>

I'm sure Amazon has it as well in one form or another.

Its south of the Mason-Dixon line so "technically" Maryland/DC are in the South. Personally, I don't know why people argue about it all the time. It's not in the North, its not in the South. It's in the middle, that's all there is to it.

but ya a player I personally love that hasn't been mentioned yet is Kolorov. He's a Serbian left back who's not the world's best defender but he pushes forward with some nice overlapping runs and is one of the leagues best crossers of the ball. Also has a dirty left foot on free kicks.

That map is awesome. I can't fathom having 6 professional teams from the same city. I can't fathom having 20 professional teams all that close to each other. I really hope to make it over some day. I have been to Italy (during summer of 2010 when they were awful at the World Cup), so now I need to find a way over to Manchester.

I understand and appreciate some of the sarcasm already. We treat new members similarly on our board. To clear things up - I followed the EPL a good bit this season and know of all the players who played well (Aguero, Yaya, Silva, Zabaleta, etc.), but I was just curious if there are "hometown favorites" for whatever reason. I'm just trying to get inside scoop that one wouldn't be able to obtain by just watching games on TV in the U.S. (like cheers/songs/rivalries/pertinent history/etc. that many have already answered). Thanks again!
If you have the tv turned up you can normally hear the songs in the background on tv. Or at least you can recognize them.

this is from maine road before it closed.

Invisible man is another popular one as well as the chants of "Come on City"
yaya/kolo song pretty easy to pick up and lots of vids on youtube.
you sign phil jones we sign kun aguero, kun aguero...

Rivalry: obviously manure who play at the swamp... read up on the Manchester Derbies (pronounced darby...) aka the matches between us and them... the 6-1 is popular but I also like the double in 07-08 espcially how all the city supports respected the moments silence in honor of the 50th anniversary of the munich air disaster. It was also the first time I had something to shut up the rags I know irl. Also know Welcome to Manchester (Tevez) and Why always me? (Balotelli).

Players: you'll get a better sense of who is loved/respected and who is on the outs with the fans based on the threads on here... I'm sure it's the same on any sports forum.

History wise:
know why inflatable bananas aren't racist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTmaXOcwdRo
Gillingham '99 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tge11NHJ0U city are in the yellow and black
QPR '12
this team likes to go for dramatics...I hope your heart can handle it.

If you ever get a chance to go to Manchester do it. I really liked the city as well as going to see City play.

I started supporting City in 2006 because a rag was mocking me and my favorite hockey team...I picked City thinking maybe at some point I would be able to have something to mock him about. Now I do. :) I get up every weekend (noon-ish kick offs are the worst) and try and catch as many week night games as I can, I normally end up checking the score more than doing work...

Welcome.

You know i have really enjoyed reading how the American chaps came to support us and all your stories.
I feel a bit proud we have caught the attention of many Americans actually. Having lived their i know how much the main sports monopolize support.

If any of you need a place to stay whilst visiting your welcome to give me a shout anytime :-)

Ricky cinched it for me.

And Mayweather taunted him by wearing a rag shirt during the press tour.
''The ballad Blue Moon, the song of the second of Manchester's two professional soccer franchises....''. Fuck that; bloody yanks!

I'm a City fan from Pennsylvania and I would easily choose City winning a major trophy over my favorite NFL team (Steelers). I made fun of "soccer" for years due to ignorance but once I started following City I quickly became a rabid fan. I actually got up at 5:00 am and drove 3+ hours to New York to watch them win the title against West Ham at the Mad Hatter.

You're lucky to have drawn City but in a sense you're also a bit unlucky. When I started following them they were mid-table or worse and it was a MASSIVE deal when they qualified for the Europa League. Seeing Slur Alex constantly berate officials and Michael fucking Owen score a winner a mere seven minutes into four minutes of added time really made me even more passionate to see them embarrass the scum. Throw in a dash of Hairplugs Rooney telling Chris Foy he'd like to have Vincent Kompany sent off and Foy obliging made it even worse. Missing the bad times can only mean you'll never fully appreciate the good times.

But seeing City completely dismantle those showers of shit 1-6 at the swamp made it all worth it. And now City routinely remind them who their daddies are.

I won't answer all of your questions but the two players who I think Americans would like best and appreciate are Pablo Zabaleta and Vincent Kompany. There is no drama with them, no diving and they both have the heart of a fucking lion.

Posted like a life long City fan... Your descendants must have been Mancs..

(i'm not Man City fan in Mississippi. I'm just facilitating him/her and placing her topic in broader reach)

But are you a Man City fan from anywhere? City fans don't call themselves 'Man City' fans! There's a lot of Rags sniffing around now Van Snaal has had his first presser!!

City fan from Cork, Ireland. Just quoting our new US friend's name verbatim. See my post in this thread:

I became a fan when I won a competition to meet Niall Quinn (striker from the early 90s) in my local hotel (in Cork, Ireland).
I was 10 or so and since then I've supported them.

I'll always think of City as a club where there is always something - high expectations, low expectations, extreme despair, extreme joy, crazy goings on - it's never boring or run of the mill.
I like to think we're unique in that but we're probably not - it's just being a City fan you kinda get blinkered a little.

Enjoy the ride,
R
