England's Geography

Woolwich / Arsenal - a part of South London situated in North London. One of England's primary import regions. Many raw goods will pass through this region but not before basic processing has occurred prior to shipment to East Manchester where the products are polished and paired with Silverware.

Liverpool - a region renowned for its candlelit coast and choirs that rejoice in former glories. The language spoken in this region has its own dialect, referred to a 'vulgar', 'delusional' or 'incoherent'. This region is also renowned for its exports to Spain. Not a bad place if you're looking for a light bite.

Salford / Stretford - an area where time seems to have stood still, Locals refer to this is jovially as 'Fergie Time' but is more widely known as 'a Victorian swamp' amongst discerning scholars.

Tottingham - Another region of North London, but annexed from the general public frequently. At least twice a year, a shooting tournament is held between the local police force, and young athletes carrying hand crafted firearms. Celebrations go on well into the night with ad hoc bonfires and fireworks in the main streets, lit by local children.

ManUre fans we refer to as 'rags' - there's a lot of deeper history just in that fact alone

Liverpool are the (bin)dippers

Tottenham the Spuds.

Then you have the red (arsenal) and blue (Chelsea) Tarquins, referencing McManus's concise definition, because it is a, "Posh twat name probably given by posh twat parents in Surrey."

All you really need to know is that we are Manchester City & we fight to the end in every game! Plus we are the fans who knew the depth of the lows but kept coming back & are now rejoicing in the glorious heights with the occasional 'typical City' day, that's the day when we lose or draw against a bottom of the league club!

However, City fans are far and away THE BEST IN THE LAND, IN ALL THE WORLD. We are together, we are family. Like family we disagree sometimes but don't ever let any other fans pick on us because then we prove we are as one!!!

Man City fans = Family in spirit.
Man United fans = Literally family, all of them are related. Their family trees have no branches.

I'm a City fan from Pennsylvania and I would easily choose City winning a major trophy over my favorite NFL team (Steelers). I made fun of "soccer" for years due to ignorance but once I started following City I quickly became a rabid fan. I actually got up at 5:00 am and drove 3+ hours to New York to watch them win the title against West Ham at the Mad Hatter.

You're lucky to have drawn City but in a sense you're also a bit unlucky. When I started following them they were mid-table or worse and it was a MASSIVE deal when they qualified for the Europa League. Seeing Slur Alex constantly berate officials and Michael fucking Owen score a winner a mere seven minutes into four minutes of added time really made me even more passionate to see them embarrass the scum. Throw in a dash of Hairplugs Rooney telling Chris Foy he'd like to have Vincent Kompany sent off and Foy obliging made it even worse. Missing the bad times can only mean you'll never fully appreciate the good times.

But seeing City completely dismantle those showers of shit 1-6 at the swamp made it all worth it. And now City routinely remind them who their daddies are.

I won't answer all of your questions but the two players who I think Americans would like best and appreciate are Pablo Zabaleta and Vincent Kompany. There is no drama with them, no diving and they both have the heart of a fucking lion.

My geography of England is sub-par at best, so besides Man U, what other Premier League teams are close in proximity? Are rivalries truly bitter in every aspect of life or just during the matches? Again, thanks to all for your help.

The easiest way of answering that is to show you a map of where the teams are:

map-England-premier-1415.jpg

To put it into perspective for you, the two furthest teams apart on that map - Southampton in the south and Newcastle in the north - are approximately 280 miles apart, which is just short of the distance between Biloxi and Memphis. Note that in the UK, unlike the US, it is very common for multiple teams to come from the same city (for instance yes, you can see six teams all from London), which is part of the reason that club rivalries are vitriolic as it's near impossible to avoid bumping into fans of rival clubs even if you're just walking down your road to the local corner shop.

EDIT----forgot to mention I'm from Rockville, MD. just outside DC. U tell me if that counts as southern or northern US cuz nobody here knows.

Hey Mississippi fan, welcome to bluemoon! As they say in 12 step meetings KEEP COMING BACK!

Congrats, you've won the lottery. I became a City fan (or as the Brits call it, a supporter) in a very similar way. I drew Man City out of a hat for a FIFA tournament with some buddies. This was quite a few years ago. It was long enough ago that I was upset because I had drawn one of the worst teams in the hat, which featured 12 teams from the Premier League. I am a huge fan of the band Oasis (big time City fans), and had been to one of their shows that past summer (2005 or 2006 maybe) so I was fine with playing as Man City. I won that FIFA tournament and City have been a huge part of my life ever since. I never miss a game, have a City jersey hanging above my bed, I cried watching the Aguero goal (multiple times), Yaya Toure is the background of my computer. I frickin learned Spanish (not all that well) so I could talk shit to the United/Chelsea/Bayern/Barca/Madrid fans in the kitchen of the restaurant I work at. I know one other City fan in my hometown, but that's fine, every time we see each other we talk City and have drinks. More blues will come. That much I can assure you. Especially with all the matches being shown live these days on non-satellite channels these days.

You're in for one hell of a ride. The Premier League has the passion/tradition of the SEC, the epic action of the NFL, and the superstars of the NBA. Its addicting. And the best part is the season runs from August to May. You'll find some things kind of weird during the first season or two...

-Why are there ties?
-WTF is offside?
-Why do teams fire their coaches so often?
-What is the away-goal aggregate rule?
-Why don't the best players play every match?
-Why the FUCK are they holding hands with little kids?
-Why doesn't the clock stop when the ball goes out of bounds?
-Why do they act like they're hurt when they didn't even get touched?
-Why doesn't the coach call a timeout?
-What is this strange transfer system? Why don't they just trade players and why no salary cap?
-How can the media just lie/make stuff up like that? Messi isn't transferring to Cardiff haha

In a few years you'll care 5 times more about Manchester City Football Club than you do the US men's national team.

If anyone calls you a glory hunter/plastic tell em to fuck off. Would I be such a huge fan if City hadn't been bought and became the best team in the UK, honestly...probably not. But I'd still support City and certainly wouldn't be supporting any other club.

I'm sure you've seen Harry Potter, the Sorting Hat has decided you and I are blues and it's our job to support the club now. Welcome.

Ricky cinched it for me.

And Mayweather taunted him by wearing a rag shirt during the press tour.

That map is awesome. I can't fathom having 6 professional teams from the same city. I can't fathom having 20 professional teams all that close to each other. I really hope to make it over some day. I have been to Italy (during summer of 2010 when they were awful at the World Cup), so now I need to find a way over to Manchester.

I understand and appreciate some of the sarcasm already. We treat new members similarly on our board. To clear things up - I followed the EPL a good bit this season and know of all the players who played well (Aguero, Yaya, Silva, Zabaleta, etc.), but I was just curious if there are "hometown favorites" for whatever reason. I'm just trying to get inside scoop that one wouldn't be able to obtain by just watching games on TV in the U.S. (like cheers/songs/rivalries/pertinent history/etc. that many have already answered). Thanks again!

If you get to NYC go see a match at The Mad Hatter, the Mancs that were there were amazed at how many songs us Yanks knew.
