Forced Marriages

But thanks for your input.

Yes, but i'm speaking in terms of western society, including Europe and north America. Racism and capital punishment occurs regulary in western society. To say another culture holds stone age values, when our own does is ignorant.

Nothing to do with us. If thats how other cultures want to operate, respect this wish.

Everything to do with us when young British girls are being lured abroad under false pretences and forced into marriages they don't want.
I couldn't give a toss what other cultures do abroad but I don't want their stone age values in my country, thank you very much.

Granted, we should take action against such events occuring, but to ban forced marriages being recognised from overseas is a step too far. If another culture wants to live this way, let them get on with it, and allow them to be accepted and respected in our society, not ban aspects of their culture. Should muslim majority countries ban all western marriages from being accepted in their country? no. Let them have their way of doing things.

Stone age values? the same values the captain of the England team allegedly holds? Racism still exists, and so do forced marriages. Im not saying either are right, just showing that you can't criticise other cultures for holding traditional views when racism and capital punishment still exists in western societies, and these are things which i certainly consider stone age values.

So if a population in this country started stoning women to death for adultery you would condemn it, but say ultimately it's there culture although you think it's wrong they can do what they like?

I think you have let tolerance and equality get in the way of your basic humanity!

Your moral compass is pointing the wrong way if you think we should allow a young girl brought up in a western culture be forced to marry a guy normally twice her age and much less educated.

Also you state it is a culture issue? It's nothing of the sought, it does not happen in most Muslim countries (arranged marriages are a different issue) it tends to happen in rural backwaters where the population remain largely uneducated

Speaking from my own viewpoint, I couldn't give a toss. To be labelled ignorant by someone defending modern day slavery is actually quite satisfying. Cheers.

Smacks of bringing in a bit of pointless and unworkable legislation that most people can agree in principle with. In order that they can distract people from the cuts.

A bit like this episode of yes minister.

Racism and capital punishment are both illegal in this country so that analogy is pretty redundant.

Britain is also one of the few countries that encourages migrants to celebrate their culture and keep their identities. Not however at the expense of our laws and why should we?
As a country we have gone out of our way to make immigrants welcome. Our govt has made it illegal to discriminate against them. Collectively as a nation we have made it socially unacceptable to ridicule or discriminate against them.

Isn't it time our culture was given the same respect that we show to theirs ?

Didn't take long for one of them to arrive did it.

It appears i'm in a minority here, but my views still remain, despite some interesting points raised by you good folks. I still think that if thats the way in which someone wants to raise their child, then let them. Banning forced marriages, in my opinion, is a step too far.

So if I wish to raise my child a racist or murderer or modern day slave driver then that should also be ok yeah?

So you think slavery is perfectly acceptable as long as people want to have slaves?

Or are you getting mixed up here? Forced Marriage is a completely different thing to arranged marriage

I'll up the stakes and say I do care what happens in other countries regardless of so-called culture, religion, nationality or any other such bullshit which are not worthy of respect. Everyone should have as much freedom as can be allowed without them inflicting harm on someone else.
