Frank Field Quits Labour

Frank is threatening to resign and cause a by-election this morning. He won't because he knows he wouldn't win and would lose his lucrative job. His phraseology was interesting in interview - " I am considering whether I should resign.........whether I should have a by-election" - this is all about him and the damage he hopes to inflict on his party leader and therefore by extension the party he claims he loves.
You think a 76 year old man who could draw a gold plated pension tomorrow from being an MP for 39 years is worried about losing his job? Really?

Wait, but you're playing it both ways.

You're saying that essentially the personalities aren't important and it's the Party who get voted for.

But then are talking about personality driven actions such as deselections, agendas against Corbyn in the media and people like Jones being strong independent voices.

Either the personalities.matter to voters or they don't. Can't switch that opinion on and off.

far from it - I am simply pointing out that when it suits the right they pick which version they want. Sheep or personality.

You seem to think that the seat has remained unchanged since 1979 - people can like an MP then fall out of liking them or their actions. Old Cleggy did well in his seat in elections and was even party leader but that didn't save him when he shat on the students. Ed Balls was a big personality who found his constituents turned on him when they found they no longer liked him - its not unreasonable to suggest that Field has been returned at a number of GE's by a constituency that wants to vote Labour but no longer wants to vote Frank Field.

Just listen to yourself.

Are you seriously trying to claim he only got voted in because its a safe seat and that since 1979, the people of Birkenhead have hated him and that he hasn't represented them?

hmmmmmmm - just read my post and absolutely nothing that I had said is as represented in your response - have it your way if you want and just make stuff up.

Who are the right as you put it?

i dont see many Tories wading into this argument, just other labour voters and supporters looking at the way he is being treated here and thinking wtf?

Are we the right you speak of?

I think a narcissistic old man like him fears being out of the limelight. Furthermore why do you think so many MP's work so late into life when that gold plated pension is just a fingertip away? Being an MP brings so much that being an ex-MP doesn't. Its not just the money its status and profile as well. Also for many its not just their job its their wife and kids on the payroll too.

as someone who is often referred to on here as a "leftie" I know who I mean and won't be taking any lectures from anyone about labelling.

He has no wife and kids.

Isn't it just possible that he's acting on principle and his seniority allows him to do this without having to worry about financial consequences or future career prospects? A bit like John McCain.

I was referring to MP's in general if you read what I put not Field specifically.

Who’s smashing windows ?

From the Spectator July 2016;
"At a Labour party meeting in Hove at the weekend, a steward at the college hosting the meeting was spat at by an activist, while Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire’s activists were left ‘frightened, intimidated and in tears’ after a confrontation with pro-Corbyn Momentum activists at a recent local party meeting. Angela Eagle, meanwhile, had a brick thrown through her office window and her staff threatened."

This was the MO of Militant before they were cleared out, its reappeared under the banner of Momentum and Fields is being targeted along with any other MP not of the rabid left variety.

I think you'll find the Angela Eagle brick story was, how can I put it? A little exaggerated.

Possibly, but the connections outside of shared heritage seem tenuous.

Not sure what that means? Genuine question.

George Eaton, the political editor of the New Statesman, is the reason I gave up my NS subscription after 30 odd years, but this interview in the Jewish Telegraph really exposes his hand and the nub of this whole campaign....

Mr Eaton said: “Just imagine if a Conservative politician had said about another ethnic group what Jeremy Corbyn had said about ‘Zionists’.

But Zionists are not an ethnic group, so the comparison is deliberately disingenuous, Eaton is an arsehole but he's not a fool, he is deliberately lying.

Tell me then you can't see what I'm on about.

From the Jewish Chronicle - an organisation who's editor is on record as denouncing the "left" as the"real enemy"

Of course its only within Labour that there are offices attacked and intimidation of staff and MP's - thats the narrative being pushed

So your not saying they are not happening or condemning it, but justifying them because it happens in other parties as well. The Soubry story is about the level of abuse from the public not an internal movement hijacking the party.
