Other than being comfortable with a microphone in his hand, he has no credible qualifications for providing an "expert" opinion.

Apart from playing the game professionally all his life, being a respected sports author and a lifelong blue, you mean.

Anyway, "qualifications" don't matter a jot in this field. You stand or fall on your ability week to week. And Eyre is well respected amongst football people.

He spent most of his life failing to play the game professionally. One football league appearance.

He played for Rossendale United a few times, granted.

Ability on the football field and punditry bear absolutely no relationship to each other whatsoever, in my experience, Boots.

What qualifies anyone to be a pundit though? Mark Lawrenson won just about everything but imo talks absolute shite as do many of the top pundits. Paul Merson won leaguye titles, does he qualify? Most football journalists have never done anything in football, some are good some are terrible. Fred has spent a life time in football, he's played, he's coached and he has done a lot of scouting. He watches so much football at every level that it makes my mind boggle. I'm not sure what qualifies a pundit but I know that Fred makes more sense to me than most. I don't always agree with him but that isn't neccessary.

I like Fred but I think his problem is that he's stuck in a timewarp looking at the past with Rose tinted glasses at the past where snoods didn't exist!! He's not as bad as jimmy wagg though with his constant harping on about the golden years, saying that I wish I'd have listened to it last night instead of listening that no mark Craig burley spouting his negative shite about us last night!!!

You may be right on that, Dave. My point was that he is, essentially, just a fan. Sure, he's written books (good ones, too) but his first was about his constant failings in football. His second about being an after dinner speaker.

I can't think of any other pundits that are, essentially, just fans.

You're right, i suppose. The vast majority of local radio pundits are ex-players. I don't listen to other teams so I don't know if there are others like him out there.

the only live commentary i could find last night was bbc radio manchester - had to switch eyre off and listen to talkshite updates instead , he is so negative he is pathetic - what is the problem with the local bbc coverage ? eyre and gleghron are 2 of the most miserable gits i have ever heared in my life . absolutely zero positive comments from either most of the time

Fred eyre is indeed a negative miserable git, Nigel Gleghorn is a bloody sunderland fan and jimmy wagg is a tosspost; I think Ian Chesseman is a top and fair Blue though

On what basis can you think Jimmy Wagg is a tosspot?

Great bloke, funny, loves the blues and excellent at his job.

Football punditry - no qualifications needed other than a flexible and working mouth, and a small brain. To have actually played the game can be the biggest hindrance, 'cos then some commissioning agent for the broadcasting company think you might know what you are talking about.

Most football fans, most, not all, of whatever persuasion would choose objectivity ahead of anything else, and objectivity seems the one thing that is in the shortest supply, whether you watch BBC, Sky, ESPN, or ITV, or whoever. The baggage that pundits drag into the studio would make Zsa Zsa Gabor's luggage seem inadequate.

Haven't heard a radio commentary for god knows how long but never used to mind Eyre and Wagg. I often catch the phone on the way home from games and am invariably amazed at how such a know nothing **** as Gleghorn manages to steal a living, obviously it's all about opinions but I always wonder if this twat has just watched the same game as me, suspect he just has a list of football clichés he reads out at random.
