Good news. Will they get on with Starmer?

I think Macron and Starmer will get on well, they are both centrist technocrats. Macron has a slightly harder edge to him and can be stubborn even when shit's burning in the street.

The legislative, if the exit poll is correct, looks like it will be a mish-mash alliance of far left, centre left and centre. Not dissimilar to Corbyn's Labour party... so while it probably isn't a perfect fit for the UK's slightly more moderate House, it's an environment Starmer will be familiar with.

Looks like people have turned out to put the far right back in their box. Good on the French.

And it looks like Macron's gamble may have partially paid off, though he will now have to negotiate with the left alliance. Not the worst outcome. Basically a centre-left assembly, much like the UK. That has cheered me up immensely.

Seems like the choice in France is between the far right and the far left. Both full of racism and anti semitism. Maybe our options weren’t that bad after all.

I think it's partly due to the run off system. People vote in the 1st round with less caution and they use it to send a message. Then in the second round they vote with a bit more thought towards the outcome.

I'm not sure that is the general trajectory really. The far right is clearly on the rise pretty much everywhere and it will probably take economic good times, a redistribution of wealth or distraction by a global conflict to reverse it at this point.
