Full Backs?

Think Pep playing Lahm in MF might have created a false impression that any of our fullbacks can play there too..Lahm is a one-off & brilliantly intelligent.
Zaba actually started out as a midfielder. So it's not such a foreign position to him.

I do too. And what's frustrating is people affording certain players more time even though there's clear evidence they're on the wane.

Yeah, definitely agree with that. We got exposed so many times last season on the wings.

Clichy is a good squad player, but he's not a starter. Zabaleta needs to move on, as good as he's been for us, injuries have completely hampered him. Sagna and clichy for squad, 2 new full backs needed.

How anyone can include players like Delph as a left back option is beyond me, the man is absolutely shit full stop. As for Zinchenko, since when did people get this idea into their heads that he's a left back? He's an attacking midfielder, it's as clear as day just by watching a few clips of him.

I would happily take Peres for Zabaleta, Jonas Hector for Kolarov. Good value for money on both players.

Watch clips of Rose etc, you would never guess he was a full back. YouTube tend to focus on that kind of stuff. BTW - Delph is not shit - injured yes- shit no. Calling our players out is shit though.

You don't think Clichy is starter material so you'd buy Hector? Based on what exactly?

Think of our back line as:

Kimmich-----Kompany-----Bonucci(if only)-----Hector
Kimich isn't a natural RB, just played there for Germany coz they didn't have a good one. Perhaps he'd switch there permanently I don't know. For my money I reckon Zichencho and Peres flanking 2 stud CBs will be as good if not better in 1 year.

Zichenko is an attacking midfielder with utility skills. Akin to Kimich who played RB for Germany at the Euros, and dis it quite well. I reckon those 3 game may have been Kimmich's first competitive games at the position.

Zichencho just like Kimmich has played a bit of LB. No one is claiming it's his position. Frankly he is young and probably doesn't have a settled position yet. What we know is that he is immensely talented on the ball, has very good vision VB and movement, and works hard. Kinda like Kimmich. The projection to leftback isn't far fetched, seeing as his old coach has played him there a few times.

And if there was a Manager that epitomizes ignoring positional rigidity, that Manager is now Zichenko's manager. So it's easy to see why the projections are being made.

Frankly, I think Zichenko on the left and Peres on the Right of Stones and another CB will make us even more deadly as a team.

Finally passers in every facet of the team. Granted in Peres's case, more dribbler than passer.

Jose Gaya
Why are we not in it for this guy, if he comes Kolarov can leave.

We won't find a better deal for a LB. Pay it. Send Angelino on loan for a season then let it be Gaya and Angelino for the future.

To challenge for the title, we need 2 new fullbacks. Zaba/Sagna and Clichy/Kolorov surely aren't good enough.
Let's hope Pep sees it

I think it's a bit premature to dismiss Zabaleta on the back of an injury ravaged season (he missed 19 games, or 98 days, through injury), where the whole team played badly. He's had seven excellent seasons prior to his disappointing form last campaign. He's still "only" 31, so I wouldn't write him off just yet. I'm hopefuly Guardiola can get at least another season out of him.

Both full back areas have been our weakest quality areas two seasons running. I would have had them down as priority for immediate improvements.

Kolarov has been poor for two years
Clichy is inconsistent
Zaba has looked knackered ever since the last title winning season running into the World Cup where he pretty much played every single minute of every game that season
And Sanga had a poor first season with us and while was very good defensively last season offers very little going forward (two good crosses at home and away to Watford aside I don't recall him doing much else in an attacking sense in two whole years)

I wouldn't judge a full back going forward based on what we did last year. We had 0 height in there or most of the times we didnot even have Aguero in the box. Case in point see Sagna for France, provided some amazing crosses. I think he also got a assist and should have had atleast two more bar France's poor finishing.

I also wouldn't judge a full back on what we think a full back is. Pep has very different ideas of what a full back does. Half the time playing inside either side of his pivot, in which case Fernandinho and Delph may find themselves better suited. The other point is we will probably still have no height and often no Aguero in the box as we will have a fluid front 3 or 4. I think KDB or Silva will often find himself as the free man in the box

Actually, we may not because Pep there is a good chance he is not planning to rely on utilising fullbacks, I suspect, and will either use wingbacks that some midfielders can also play in such a role (i.e. Navas or even Sterling).

This all day.
