I think it's setup for the undead to take Winterfell. Some of these characters are going to get culled. The whole series has essentially lead to this moment, so I can't see John Snow simply beating them in one episode before happily going down to Kings Landing and killing Cersei. It's just not in the nature of Game of Thrones to follow the predictable path.


Remember Yara Greyjoy's offer of retreating to Pyke? It's given the writers a path to go down that includes the loss of Winterfell, but still allowing John/Khaleesi the chance to sit on the iron throne?

I take your point about the unpredictability of GoT but if the army at Winterfell can't stop the army of the dead, (with their dragon glass weapons, special steel swords, dragons, Arya etc), then it gets very messy, and I don't think there's enough air time for complicated scenarios. We've already had 2 of 6 episodes!
We will see? Looking forward to it, whatever happens ;-)
 
I think it's certainly set up for the dead to take winterfell, and it'll be an inside job.

You'll be safe in the crypts, yeah right!

Crypts are the least safe bit in the place, what with a night king with the power to reanimate. I'd certainly not be hiding out down there for love nor money.

A big red herring imho

I am sure wights are not all the undead, bit more the recently undead, hence why they are no skeleton ones as they need sinew still to keep together, and bar rickon and possibly ned most starks are dust or bones by now

Probably all been discussed here already.

This is not the shadow of Drogon or Rhaegal arriving at King's Landing that Bran saw, but the Night King riding Viserion whilst his army lays siege to Winterfell.

There is no Valyrian steel or dragon glass at King's Landing. They are fucked.

The Night King will obliterate King's Landing with dragon fire and will raise the 500,000 strong population to fight in his army.

He will then march his army north.

Winterfell will be succesfully defended in Episode 3.

The final battle between the living and the dead will take place at the Trident;

Now that Dany and Jon are in love and Dany is clearly a tyrant, I think it is sadly obvious that Jon is going to stab her through the heart with Longclaw, which will become the mythical sword Lightbringer. Jon will defeat the Night King and the army of the dead. But not without cost.

The dead shall be reborn. I believe Jon will end up as a Night King. I don't know how, or why. The Starks have the blood of the first men, and shared land with the Children of the Forest. Jon is half Stark. He's going to make the ultimate sacrifice for the realm as he has sacrificed himself throughout the entire series.

The throne I think may go to a legitimised Gendry Baratheon and his eventual queen, Arya Stark.

I also believe Cersei will escape the burning of King's Landing and will flee but before this season is over, Jamie will strangle her to death.

Nice theory, wish it could be that way, but Game of Thrones has never done anything at the Trident so they won't finish it there. It'll finish at King's Landing because that's a location show-watchers know. Instead of introducing viewers to a whole new battlefield and location, they'll use the dragonpit / Red Keep instead. It's the same reason they didn't suddenly reintroduce the Horn of Winter when the Night King had mobilised a large enough army to pass through the Wall, and decided to use a dragon instead. Why introduce a new element to the story this late in the day when they've got no time to establish its historical importance?
