Gareth Barry

I DISAGREE. :) I think hes a perfect player to have in any team wether its the first team or bench or sorting out the coffee's. He doesn't cause no trouble and does his job with minimum fuss. He doesn't score wonder goals, he doesn't have magical gliding fleet which make you orgasm and he isn't a Brainy super dooper tackler so no one really talks much about him.

Every team needs someone like him to keep the ball ticking and show a professional approach.

Could you possibly tell me what he does do then?

The simple fact is, these "crab players" are criticised by some of their fanbase. Many United fans think Carrick is shit; up until he was the flavour of the month, Xavi was seen as a useless player at Barca (think about 3-5 years back) and even now guys like Barry get ripped.

The problem, is that their job isn't glamarous and entirely obvious. Goalkeepers save shots, strikers score goals, defenders/defensive mids win the ball, attacking mids get forward and help out. Possibly due to this, you can look at someone like Barry and wonder what the hell he does. He wins the ball every now and again, but apart from that, he doesn't do any of the above.

As he doesn't do any of the above, the criticism starts and then is picked up because people can't understand his role. This isn't a slight, I don't understand the fascination with Adam Johnson, who I believe to be a player who is 20 years late to make a truly world class player or at least needs a team plan built around him. He is as direct as you like, which isn't always a good thing and he is one dimensional at best.
Now, Capello and Mancini rate him, so they see something that I don't because of their greater knowledge, and I learn what in the coming seasons.
Also, I never understand people who criticise Ibra, who is probably the best striker in the world outside of Balo IMO.

Long story short, sometimes we look at players and just cannot 'get them'. I don't think that Lee was been a twat, I just thinks that he looks at Barry like I look at AJ and cannot see what the fuss is about.

I rate Barry. But honestly you are not doing yourself any favours by mentioning Xavi.

-- Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:05 am --

Fortunately football is a little more subtle than "the tackler", "the goalscorer" and "the speed demon".

Barry keeps things ticking over. He is very good at sniffing out fires and putting them out. He is very good at finding a blue shirt in tight positions (yesterday excluded). He does a very important job for us.

Ultimately I think he needs to be replaced by someone who is a more creative ball player for us to reach where we want to, given the system we play. But in top 4 PL terms he can definitely do a job.

So you think he needs to be replaced (even though you think he is good) but he can definitely do a job for the top 4 teams??? Im rather confused and i think you are as well. If he is good enough, why does he need replacing???

I'm not confused.

There is a big difference between making the CL (which we can achieve with Barry in the side), and challenging for CL and PL titles (which I don't think we can, but is ultimately where we want to be). I'm talking about those extra 10 points we need each season. Turning those draws against Birmingham and Fulham into wins. A more creative outlet in central midfield could be the difference. You look at Barca with Xavi and Iniesta. Arsenal with Fabregas, Wilshere, Ramsey. United with Scholes. Madrid with Alonso. Dortmund with Sahin, Kagawa, Gotze.

I don't see Barry AND De Jong as a proposition that is good enough to win the biggest things. But it is good enough to secure a top 4 finish.

There wasn't exactly a load of options for him to pass to especially in the second half. Like a lot of our players he looked tired.
Totally agree. GB had very little options with the poor movement off the ball yesterday. OK he may lack pace but he is reliable and does a lot of work that clearly goes unnoticed by some blues. It's no coincidence that all of his managers pick him in their best 11. Teams need players like GB to function

Very poor v Wigan....time for a rest kid !

Hopeless. With NdJ back he should be no where near the first team.

Slow, clueless and the first touch of a donkey.

i'm not one for slagging our players off,but i think he's struggling at the moment,he quite often finds himself with the ball at his feet and looks clueless. When he does manage to get a pass off, then it quite often goes astray to an opposition player, but he wasn't on his own yesterday, and if it wasn't for some good solid defending, and some good fortune, then we could have easily lost that game.

I think our midfield is too static. When Johnson is fit we used to bring him on in games like yesterday to provide a bit of width and he had the capability to split open a defence.God help us if Silva picks up a long term injury.

On the ball he got everything wrong yesterday. But off the ball he was superb, countless interceptions on the edge of our box and his movement was fantastic. Very definition of a mixed bag.

Been saying this for a while now. He doesn't do too much wrong but he doesn't do much right either. He can't score, can't assist or create half decent tackler and can only play simple passes.

Not good enough if we are to move to the next level

Barry desperately needs pace around him. When he's alongside Vieira and Yaya 'plodding' Toure he has no hope. Yaya is actually very quick when he gets going which makes it all the more frustrating seeing him jog around while the game passes him by.

I am not Barry's biggest fan but I think he is having a decent season and like a few others could do with a rest.
