Gareth Barry

Barry has been well worth the money, but it's time to move him on.

He will cost us the best part of £6m if we allow him to see out his final year with us. His wages are massive and we might manage to scrape a fee of around £2m this summer to offset his salary.

He is on the downward curve and just doesn't have the capacity to perform at the highest-level. It happens to all players, the great and the good.

There were plenty of culprits in the Cup Final but Barry was even made to look past it by the enthusiastic running of Wigan.

Memory might be playing tricks, but I believe it was Barry's suicide ball across the back which resulted in Zabaleta also getting sent off?

This is all true.

The thing is though its a squad game nowadays. With the Jury very nearly in on Javi Garcia and it isn't favourable and with Jack Rodwell being so delicate I just think we should keep him around. In the really big games in the Premiership against our rivals he is usually one of the stars of the show and for £6M its a small price to pay for so much quality and experience.

It's not just £6m though...City would also have to offer him a new extension or he walks for free next summer.

That would be a further financial commitment that makes no sense for a player who has question marks over his ability to maintain his levels right now, let alone, two years from now.

Gareth is in a very strong position and knows it. Pick up top wages for another 12 months, chance to land another medal, then pick up a juicy signing-on fee elsewhere, same goes for Lescott.

Doesn't make it right, but that's football. City need to do what is best for us.

The only logical step is for City to lower his fee enough for him to move before the window closes, so a club can get near to his money.

To be honest, I'm not sure there are many club out there who would consider it prudent to hand Gaz a £60,000 a week deal, at this stage of his career, unless you count the mug payers such as Stoke and QPR.

Shame we can't sell both Gareth and Garcia, perhaps recoup £12m. Milner and Rodwell are good enough and need to get more chances to play back-up, with hopefully, a couple of youngsters knocking on the door in 18 months.

Milner will also be in this position in 12 months as I think currently he has 2 years left. Wonder if he will get a new contract?

Very few players do the honourable thing and cut their wages to play regular football elsewhere if they see their chances of playing time are close to none. Barry has done great for us and has been worth his fee. I wouldn't mind him staying on another year with perhaps a future duty in New York lying in front of him. If so, a loandeal as proposed by City to Villa looks a decent solution to all parties. I wouldn't mind either if he was to be sold though.

We'll find out by how much he's used this season I guess. If he does well he will no doubt get a new contract

It was Zaba's idiotic challenge that resulted in Zaba being sent off.

Again, I can't argue with any of Tolmie's logic.

My point though still stands. He is still a vital player in our squad especially in the Premiership and £2M quid for a quick sale and the savings on the Salary may be a false economy if we hit suspensions and injuries in what is hopefully going to be a busy and successful Season.

I think our best option is to bite the Bullet on this one, get 20 to 25 more decent performances out of him and then let him walk at the end of the Season with a large vote of thanks. By which time maybe Rodwell has passed him in the pecking order.

It was Barry's wayward crossfield pass that led directly to Zab's desperate challenge.

A few passes between Wigan players, wasn't the last man, had cover and did not need to go to ground. Yes Barry lost the ball needlessly, but Zaba went to ground wrecklessly and needlessly as he has been susceptible of before.
