Gareth Southgate

Getting a bit carried away. He has done well with a poor team and poor opposition.
Stones Walker and Raheem (and Delph) play for the best English football team ever.

Harry Maguire could play for us, he’s good enough.

Trippier is a belting player and has had a very good WC.

Henderson has his limitations but he had a great CL run and had a cracking game today.

Kane is world class.

Alli is better than he’s shown this WC, Lingard is actually alright despite being annoying.

It’s not a bad team at all, just lacks a true playmaker/attacking mid.

Yet we've played similar teams and gone out with no one feeling an affinity to the team. Walked through town tonight, people like this squad. Give him a break.
Quite like the guy as a person/human being just stating the draws been very kind to England and if you're honest don't know how old you are or how far you can go back it's been a shite world cup in terms of class

We’re lucky we beat Columbia on pens. Let’s be honest, croatia and England have had a 1 in a million World Cup draw. To get to the final without playing one top team is insane.

He has done well so far. Instigating cultural change by focussing on players who have gone through age groups, rather than just playing for big clubs, is admirable against a backdrop of media fervour.

I’m still not a huge fan of the system, with a good few players playing in slightly unfamiliar roles. I think Alli and Lingard as #8s will catch us out without the ball at some point and would love to have see Wiltshire in the squad instead of Welbeck. But, you can’t really argue with getting to the semi final, can you!?
For changing the culture of the squad, backing younger players who have grown up together in junior national sides and forging a real spirit, Southgate should be huge credit. He has been brave and been his own man; the media aren’t picking this England team and that makes a refreshing change.

Gareth Southgate is the perfect manager for England. He never blames his players (Mouriniho take note), he ecourages the team ethic and plays to a plan that suits the available players.

In such an environment, English players do well.

With all the sucess at youth level of late, the English FA are also clearly doing something right as well in getting players to play well as a team at the highest international level.

Regardless of how far the team have got (or might get) Southgate's biggest achievement is making the England team likeable again.

This is the first time in my life that England have genuinely punched above their weight in terms of how far they got in a tournament. In the past, the best you could hope for is for England to do exactly as well as you'd expect. People talk about the easy run as if it wasn't a deliberate decision to go for the easier side of the draw.

I was also one of those who wasn't massively inspired when they chose him. But other international teams have done well with inexperienced coaches or coaches promoted from within the national setup. Germany in particular.

Seems to be his own man, especially in sticking to his own guns and ignoring what the media wants, and has clearly been influenced, to an extent, by Pep’s way of playing, though with less real quality to work with. He also appears to have put some ‘steel’ into John Stones.

What you really mean is that all the teams you expected to do well haven't done well and it's messed with your preconceptions.

The less fancied nations have caught up and the football snobs don't like it.

I must admit, like others I thought he was a safe apoointment after the fat sam fiasco. He has done well in getting this England team to appreciate possession, something that past England teams have struggled with.
You can see the limitations of our midfield in a creative manner and our main goal threat is set pieces and penalties.
If we dont beat Croatia in the semis, i hope he is given time to improve as we havent had all the 'we can win the world cup' build up this time and think it has helped with less pressure on the players.

What's your definition of a 'top team'?

Brazil? Drew with Switzerland and only beat Costa Rica in added time.

Germany? Lost to South Korea and Mexico.

Spain? Lost to Russia.

France? Drew with Denmark.

Argentina? Drew with Iceland.

So who are these top teams we haven't played?

Wtf I don't give a toss who wins it but your not telling me England have played anyone good

He’s doing a decent job and as mentioned he has made England team a lot more likeable the added bonus that every step forward we take in this tournament is like a dagger to fat Sam’s heart (a sharp dagger to through all that blubber mind) he fucking hates it and it brings joy to me, I always have a little chuckle to my self about the radio ad that was running with the fat lad imprloring fans to buy tickets for England’s first home game under his Stewardship a game he never actually got to turn up for.
