Big battle for power on the horizon now
Well well well, Cook blows his own foot off. It was always going to happen and ultimately should be good news for the club in the long term. Nice guy he might have been, but he signed his own death warrant with the way the Hughes sacking and subsequent press conference was handled. And the gaffes...sweet Jesus, a club under fire from sections of the media can only take so much.
What's going to happen now? I suspect this may lead to some serious wrangling for power behind the scenes. Our manager will be delighted with this news as he had no love for Cook. I was told in summer he demanded his resignation but was rebuked. He's made no secret of his desire for more control at the club, and his irritation at the way City were handling player exits. In many ways he's been vindicated on this. And he certainly wants more transfer control, like other British managers, although ADUG went down that route with Mark Hughes and ended up with Rocky Santa Cruz. He'll be on the phone to Khaldoon, you can bet your bottom dollar.
Marwood was a pal of Cook and has made enemies on the staff too. I don't know what the manager thinks of him but whispers abounded of various people unhappy with his "tell-tale" type relationship with Abu Dhabi. His position must surely be significantly weakened by this news. A new incumbent may well deem him surplus to requirements and he'll join Cooky on the chuck-bus.
I presume City will go all out for a big hitter to unite the various factions of the club and promote the club's image on a worldwide basis. I have no idea what ADUG's criteria will be. Kenyon? Blue and experienced, but various question marks. Dein? Has to be a possibility. I can't see Williams having the gravitas on a European scale. Outside of football there is DAvid Potts of Tesco, A City fan with a big reputation.
I think Abu Dhabi will use this as a chance to have a root and branch review, and there may be more bloodletting. I sense a lot of political manouvering on the horizon amongst the various players involved.
One thing is for certain. This is the best job in world football and City must seize this opportunity to move to the next level - as a European force - with rock-solid leadership from the top of the club. Come on ADUG. This is a crucial time for MCFC. You need to get this one right.
Onwards and upwards.
