Garry Cook resigns (merged)

Re: Garry Cook resigns

Bernstein won't quit the FA to come back, would be a PR disaster for him and have people asking questions of his actions while FA boss.

We don't want a blue as CEO. We want a business man with a passion for success not emotionally tied. It is the fans job to act with irrational emotion about the club they love and it is the boss’s job to be passionate about success.

Remember the great job Franny Lee did?

I think Cook is a loss to the club, he made a mistake that most people have done in sending the e-mail and a bigger one in denying it.

The next bloke will do an even better job, as long as he is not a fan.

I dont' care one jot whether he's a fan or not.

I just care that he's the best CEO on the market. And I'd prefer it if he didn't talk in corporate bullshit cliches all the time, but that's a personal thing.

Re: Garry Cook resigns

Fair enough. Good timing, a well executed public execution followed by the prospect of a fresh start. Too much bad feeling about the place, too many stories and situations have dragged on and on. I think it's about a lot of things. Despite hiring TWO executives to help him on the football side, we failed miserably to move on players this summer. Instead of fees, or at least getting rid of the problems, we've got bad feeling and bad press. And we'd be back there next summer. This story encapsulated all of that.

Also consider that Cook probably didn't support Mancini as he might have. Why do you think Platt was in the papers yesterday dropping the line that it would have been De Rossi, only we didn't manage to sell the deadwood?

I also remember him managing to become the story when the new sponsorship deal was announced. Cook has paid the price for all this and more.

Personally I'm looking forward to the fresh start. I can't wait to begin toying with the people who will emerge over the next couple of weeks, violently insisting that they KNOW Pete 'Honest' Kenyon has been given the job.

Re: Garry Cook resigns

I just want to say how sorry I am that Garry Cook has resigned. Maybe his position was untenable but he did a great job for Manchester City and silly comments (Thaksin, Dunney, this email aside, whether or not he sent it), we have a lot to thank him for.

THANKS GARRY. BEST OF LUCK WITH WHATEVER YOU DO.

Can Bernstein do the FA job and be CEO at city? Imagine the rags, the sun and sky sports squirming in their seats at this one!!!

I hope so mate, it was Bernsteins hard work that got us the coms move, which in turn made us attractive to our current owners.

Re: Garry Cook resigns

Shamefull episode by all. Email sent in error, leaking to press 11 months later, Kia etc etc.

Done the right thing and offered to resign which city accepted.
I have total faith that our owners will get someone as good or better in to replace him.

Media and other fans will lap this up, thinking they have won the battle but we will no doubt get someone even better in and they may rue this day of how they helped stoke the fire and getting him to leave

Great idea.

Re: Garry Cook resigns

This is what Cook said pre-Mansour: "Can we win the Premier League? Yes. Course we can. Can we? Yes. Will we? It might take a bit longer. Growing up at Nike, in the United States, you don’t sit around saying: ‘Can we.’ You say: ‘We will.’ I’ve got to change that here. I talk to my employees about it. You get: 'This is England, not America, you know' and then 'This is Manchester, not London, you know' and then 'This is Manchester City, not Manchester United, you know.' We have to change the culture." Obviously it's taken staggering amounts of money to "change the culture" and we haven't won the league but I do think Cook's wacky, evangelical and somewhat chaotic approach has served us well in helping getting us from there to here
