Gas & Electricity

Does anyone on here have Solar Panels. Debating whether it would be worthwhile to buy some. I can afford the price rises, but if it makes more financial sense to make my house greener I will do that.
I was thinking of getting photovoltaic roof tiles because I need to replace the roof anyway in the next few years. The problem is that the technology is fairly new and it will probably get better and cheaper in the next few years. Solar panels are probably not a bad shout though if your roof is ok and you don’t mind the look of them.

Lol, don't give me that old chestnut, that's how we got in this shit in the first place. All this cock and bull about how efficient privatisation would make Utilities, it's a fookin shambles but the arseholes who gave you all this bullshit have made a nice butty. I'd stick them all on the end of a rope.
Fookin shambles is putting it kindly. Have spent time working in the energy industry pre, during and post privatisation.
What they managed to achieve was to introduce all the worst elements of private sector and combine them with worst aspects of nationalisation whilst losing the good elements of nationalisation and failing to introduce any of the potential benefits of the private sector. For good measure they replicated the mistakes in other utilities. But who gives a fuck when the right pockets have been lined and the political outcome is what you wanted anyway.

The dictionary definition of Clusterfuck should just be updated to read 'see British energy industry'.

The British aren't prone to going into the streets to riot but if this was some other countries they'd been burning down buildings well before now.

Lots of people have them near me but it’s wether the savings make the cost worth it its surprising how many you can install on a small roof
I keep thinking about them too just had a quick look on line start at 4,000 pound,

Not possible. The capital cost of the two largest would be in excess of £50bn, so you’d pay for it in increased taxes anyway. Not to mention the complication of nationalising multi nationals largely owned by French and German cos.
Wonder if there's a buy back clause, at a price not too much in excess of original privatisation price.
If not, there should be.
They've taken billions from assets that we owned and we allowed them to run as a virtual monopoly.

I could afford the outlay (let's call it £5/£6k) but I'm not sure if it makes sense financially. As the prices keep going up I'd presume they're becoming more and more cost effective.
I am supplied by a 100% renewable company, so it wouldn't make me any greener I suppose.

Shares traded on LSE, so no buy back unless we pay thru the nose.
BUT.……Our balance of payments is hugely negative so, to balance the books we need to sell assets abroad and attract foreign investment. Thus, these foreign buyers have done us a favour!
Long term we need to export more and import less. Brexit will do that!!!

Useless fucking twats would have done nowt.

That £400 was offered to everyone based on the last increase and estimated October increase, that estimate has proven to be widely understated. Plus another £650 to the hardest hit. Let’s see what they offer once the new PM is installed before we start slagging them off for not doing enough.

Do you know we’re still paying less for our energy than our parents did? I don’t recall me dad coming home from a days work asking if the government had paid the leccy bill.

I dont know the up to date position compared to the historical cost but I remember reading once that domestic energy prices went down in real terms for 20 years running after privatisation.

I couldn't say if it was the case that energy bills went down in real terms for 20 years running after privatisation. I always remember every year vast profits being reported by energy companies though, so if the customer was benefitting then it wasn't a form of charity as the energy firms were doing very nicely out of whatever we were paying too

@metalblue if that was the case and I'm not sure it is, it's been totally blown out of the water now. I don't remember my parents being in shock that the bills were going up double in a matter of months. Some people are going to be paying more for energy than they are for rent, it's unsustainable. The government has to do more or they will face vast bills to try and cope with huge amounts of people being homeless as with the interest rate rise too on top people will lose their homes. I don't remember my parents saying every single item of food they bought had gone up by at least 20p and more. Everytime I go shopping everything has risen in price.

Most of my childhood we had a coal fire, at least until my teens when we got a gas fire. No central heating as kids though which meant the bedrooms and bathrooms were freezing most of the time in winter. It was a big thing when they bought a paraffin heater. This would be on the landing and put on when my dad got up for work at 5am and again an hour before we went to bed. We had hot water bottles too.

This is unprecedented, I don't remember anything as bad as this in my lifetime cost wise for fuel and everyday items. Businesses will go bust as it's not sustainable to stay open. I saw on Granada reports a local bakeries operating costs had risen from £1,000 to £2,000 a month, they are going to close. That will be the same for many others. The ones that do try and stay open will put up prices adding to customers burdens. I don't think anybody is asking the government to pay their fuel bills they just want them at a sustainable level. If very little is done people will die from cold, hunger and suicide, pushed over the edge. Already in this country thousands of pensioners die every winter as they freeze to death in homes they can't afford to heat and live on very little food. Many slip through the net for help as they don't have internet access or know how to get any help. A lot are too proud to accept what they see as charity too.

A massive crisis and as good ship Britain sails towards the iceberg we have a current prime minister telling us it's okay we're suffering because Ukraine is suffering more. Then we have dumb and dumber fighting to lead a party that has ruined Britain for everyone but the very wealthy. Tipping point is being reached if we're not there now.

I've been looking into it and whilst the payback time used to be very long (20-25 years), its now down to 11 years and likely to be 7 years by the autumn (on currently forecast prices)
