Gas & Electricity

Well I bought a house that had a 4KW array on the roof which was on the feed in tariff.
we’d have paid what we did for the property with or without the solar so I see it as a bit of a bonus.
Absolutely amazed at how good it is though, getting circa £600 pa from the feed in tariff and free electricity so our bills are paltry.
We’re so impressed that we plan to add to it. I accept the mention of capital cost but money in savings is earning so much less that interest rates that it’s just shrinking anyhow.
That is a result. Does the old feed in tariff stay with the house. That was a great deal.

Got my bill from EDF from September to the start of Jan £730 combined and we are £750 in credit, I’d overpaid and put the £66 from the government back in, if the weather holds out then it will build up for next winter because god kniws where we will be then. December was the killer for gas, electricity is pretty much the same each day. We’ve been careful with the gas but even so it’s galling to think that the last 3 months would’ve paid for 9 months just 18 months ago!

Does anyone with British Gas know where you can view how much energy and gas you been using on a daily basis? You used to be able to view it but the've moved to a new "system" and the options are bare.

If you have a smart meter, download the Loop app and it will tell you all about what you are using.

I've managed to get by with wrapping up and using this electric throw if it gets really cold at night, but it's not been too cold lately.
Debating whether it's cheaper to go into the office more often.

It's a damp flat anyway (my leather boots have grown fur on them ffs) and hopefully I'll have moved some time this year. Not a fan of the electric wall heater.

Has anybody received a text from their energy supplier re power cuts btw? I've just received one (what to do in a case of one).

Got a flyer about power cuts today but it wasn’t from Octopus, it was from Electricity North West, whoever they are.

Just reading about energy companies switching people to prepaid meters without notice, even some smart meters can have their mode switched to be a prepay function. I get that if you don't pay your bill for usage then you risk the provider taking action, but using the latest bill for our house as an example, we received it late due to the postal strike, were asked to pay it on or before the day we received it and were threated with further action, in the very first letter/bill! It was also new year, could be plenty of families away for the holidays, not to mention the stress and anxiety sending a bill at that time will undoubtedly cause.

Surely this practice of switching without notice should be illegal? There are ofgem guidelines but clearly they're not being adhered to by energy companies desperate to recoup the money. It used to be that energy companies needed a warrant to enter your home and physically install a prepayment meter, now they can do it remotely and without telling you, as you kindly let them into your home to install a nice new smart meter. We moved into a house with smart meters already installed, we had no choice and the buggers will be damned if they're removing them without us paying a small fortune.

I can see some serious consequences for the energy firms for this, on VW emissions scale. Expect a lot of 'did you have a smart meter installed between 2015 and 2025' style ads. Apparently nearly one million UK homes will have been forced to prepay plans by energy firms since the start of 2022, and it's a battle to get back off them (and the higher tariffs they entail).
