Gas & Electricity

Just reading about energy companies switching people to prepaid meters without notice, even some smart meters can have their mode switched to be a prepay function. I get that if you don't pay your bill for usage then you risk the provider taking action, but using the latest bill for our house as an example, we received it late due to the postal strike, were asked to pay it on or before the day we received it and were threated with further action, in the very first letter/bill! It was also new year, could be plenty of families away for the holidays, not to mention the stress and anxiety sending a bill at that time will undoubtedly cause.

Surely this practice of switching without notice should be illegal? There are ofgem guidelines but clearly they're not being adhered to by energy companies desperate to recoup the money. It used to be that energy companies needed a warrant to enter your home and physically install a prepayment meter, now they can do it remotely and without telling you, as you kindly let them into your home to install a nice new smart meter. We moved into a house with smart meters already installed, we had no choice and the buggers will be damned if they're removing them without us paying a small fortune.

I can see some serious consequences for the energy firms for this, on VW emissions scale. Expect a lot of 'did you have a smart meter installed between 2015 and 2025' style ads. Apparently nearly one million UK homes will have been forced to prepay plans by energy firms since the start of 2022, and it's a battle to get back off them (and the higher tariffs they entail).
I highly suspect that the "with no notice" bit is nonsense.

ENW manage the grid in your area, so it's them that will/may be turning off the supply by areas.
Short story: six years ago, we had a power cut - just us because everybody else's lights were on.

Phoned emergency number and ENW were dispacthed in the morning: we may have to dig your entire garden up - depends where the problem is.

Luckily it was in the middle of our front lawn. They dug a big hole, found the issue, fixed it and said somebody will be here to fill the hole in in a few weeks (and they did). All very efficient.

Moral of the story: don't pay thousands of pounds to have a nice drive done at the front of your house! A real eye-opener. We were lucky but some might not be.

They have to pay for that new drive to be done, we had Cadent here last year digging up all sorts of different drives, they have companies coming behind them to repair back to what they were. Trouble is if it’s resin they will never be able to get the colour to match due to sun damage etc so you will always have a patch.

Yeah, I know they have to repair, but it would be a right PITA.

Ye mate it is, I’m currently claiming off them as they forced me to paste my car on the street overnight, some fucker ran into it and fucked off, its down ti them I couldn’t get on my drive and they admitted liability then wouldn’t answer any emails from insurance company, now it’s going through the courts I believe.

Brother in law was told his resin drive had to come up so his next door neighbour could have a car charging point.
He told them to fuck off.
They could force the issue but would have to go to court to get a wayleave to do so.
