I was in the Army and RAF cadets. Was brilliant for me. Appreciate it’s not for everyone but I learned a lot - including flying in chipmunks which I saw in the museum down at Duxford last year which made me feel suitably old.
I think that’s the difference, you had a choice as you enjoyed what you were doing. However, it would never come to fruition as it’s just another divisive method for Tories to hand to the older people of our nation.

I believe Trial by Ordeal, Jousting, and the outlawing of witchcraft are in the manifesto.
Note:
1. France is about to launch National Sevice.
2. Cameron had this in his manifesto. Worked out well.
3. National Service was introduced by Labour in 1947.
4. National Service was abolished in 1960 by the tories.
5. National service increased crime. After discharge servicemen are 30% more likely to be convicted of a crime.
France: The basis of this voluntary service (one month for 15-17 year olds) is to "increase the cohesion of the nation".

I was an army cadet. Learnt to shoot a rifle accurately and got my marksman badge for a quarter inch group at 25 yards. So useful in marketing jobs.

You can almost predict the Tory manifesto pledges as they get increasingly desperate through the campaign:

Week 1 - Bring back national service
Week 2 - Bring back capital punishment
Week 3 - Outlaw use of the metric system
Week 4 - Establish a penal colony in Rwanda for communists and paedophiles
Week 5 - War with France to take back Normandy

National Service might be a good idea in some countries in certain contexts and with specific parameters, but here it’s a non-starter.

For a start it will cost billions to implement (money we’re getting from where exactly?). And what will we get for that? A load of 18 year olds doing things they don’t want to do, a handful of which will probably cause more harm than good through disruption. The conscientious ones that wanted to give it a go would have to be babysat by the armed forces or whoever they’re volunteering for. These are people with limited skills and zero experience. Can you imagine the time it is going to take from qualified staff to do that?

Then you have the idea of enforcement. If people don’t do it, what then? A fine? In which case it just becomes yet another thing to add to the list of things separating rich and poor people in this country.

And finally, this is just adding an extra obstacle that young people have to navigate that older people never did. You’re taking time away from them that can be used for more value-add pursuits. Older people didn’t have to deal with Brexit, had free or cheaper university, didn’t get set back by COVID, have to navigate impossible house prices, drop in the real-terms value of wages… the Tories seem hellbent on making life as hard as possible for the younger generations who already have a hell of a lot to overcome to have anything resembling a successful life.

In short it’s another stupid idea from a fundamentally stupid party. It will satisfy the usual tub thumping segment of society who likes the sound of things like this without ever actually thinking them through.
I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was 18 so I went to university and came out with a ton of debt and no job and then I started from the bottom, it was 4 years of my life wasted. The current system doesn't work and it still won't work even if fees are free because the fact is the country does not need more people with university degrees.

Older people had free or cheaper university fees but that misses the point that is less older people went to university at all, many of them were working at 16. Somebody who started work at 16 will have 5+ years of experience and earnings in the bag versus a university leaver.

How many young people are in full time work today at 16? It's basically zero. Young people nowadays are only starting work in their early to mid-20's, is it any surprise that they can't afford houses? How can you save for a house when you are 21, getting pissed every night, lying in bed and attending a handful of lectures per week whilst you pay for it all with money you haven't got?

The university system is the greatest marketing scam of the last 50 years. It has made parents think that without a degree their kids can't be successful and a degree is critical to get the top jobs, it's not true. The biggest companies are begging for kids with experience, skills and a good attitude, they do not care about degrees because they'll pay for them to do degrees if it's really needed.

National service is perhaps a bad idea but only because of the military aspect. The idea of getting kids out there to gain experience, skills and do something fulfilling is an extremely good idea.

Which part of it is false?

Starting life at 21 with £30k+ of debt, no job and no tangible skills isn't ideal but that is exactly what the university sector sells to people.

I was sold it and I regret it completely, it was 4 years of my time wasted where I could of got a job and worked my way up in something. My degree has made no difference whatsoever and the irony is the company I work for offers to pay for degrees anyway which means I would of been £30k better off as well.
