No. I think the Tories will win tragically but by a small margin. I suppose it's all down to England and if it has seen Cirbyn as he is rather than how the media paint him.

The 50 ish majority is the favourite at the bookies. Hardly a surprise. There's no more than about 100 seats which change, and UKIP votes would have to go strongly to Labour rather than split evenly (unlikely as we all know they're xenophobic right wing racist Mail and Sun loving morons <grin>).

I said 50ish a fortnight ago. Nothing much has changed, although the Tory desperation setting in is amusing ( and massively depressing given the levels they've sunk to) to watch.

I agree with your middle sentence. But you cannot "police" what is not illegal, and I don't think much activity is illegal. People earning £200k a year on PAYE have to pay whatever the tax rate is, since it's taken off them at source and there's nothing they can do about it.

So that is not the demographic we are talking about. The people who avoided (not evade) paying 50% are those who have their own businesses and / or who are worth millions, even billions. If tax rates are too high, they simply pay themselves elsewhere, or restructure their businesses in some other way to avoid it. This may be unfair, but that's what they do.

That's why the LibDems want a 1p rise on the basic rate. They know from experience in government that raising the top rate, doesn't generate any money.

Firstly the majority of people earning over £100K per year are not on PAYE, they are on self assesment therefore avoiding and evading tax is easier

Secondly those that avoid tax (who are not breaking the law) are doing so using loopholes in the system. The government should be closing those loopholes so that people cannot avoid paying tax. That is the policing I am talking about regarding them. the term policing was probably not the best to use, but I was struggling to come up with a single word to cover it.

By the way, I would agree with a 1p rise in the basic rate if there was a corresponding rise in the higher rates as well (on top of a return to previous tax levels)

I agree with that. I think we do, to be fair. Hence the outcry over the scheme that people like Gary Barlow was involved in.

Gary Barlow is relatively poor though, compared to people like Lakshmi Mittal, who most people will have never heard of.

law makers can make non-domicile pay tax if they wish.
Despite owning three properties in Kensington, valued at £500m, Lakshmi Mittal is considered non-domicile, does not hold a UK passport and retains his Indian citizenship. This allowed him to pay no tax in the UK on the £393.9m dividend from his company. To be considered non-domicile a person cannot spend more than an average of 91 days in the country

Tax avoidance although not illegal is morally corrupt. We should point out all the celebs and businesses that are avoiding tax, and let the consumer decide if they want to spend their money with them.

Would that include professional footballers and football clubs? :-)

1. Tax is taken at source. Claiming reductions for things that are not real is illegal and for which you can go to prison. Most people don't do that.

2. Fair enough

3. I wouldn't. Not because it wouldn't generate any money, but because it would hurt the worst off most, whilst the highest earners wouldn't notice and/or pay it.

Boris would wipe the floor with Corbyn on a TV debate. The guy is a bulldog.

Well he has the intelligence of one. Also looks a little like one. At least the NHS would be in safe hands I suppose.
