General Videogame Thread

Disc games can be bought second hand and can of course be sold on if you don't want to keep them. Can't do that with digital. So, you might possibly save in the long run if you have the disc option.

Furthermore, not every disc game gets a digital release. Most of the 'big' games do, but if you have a taste beyond the AAA titles, or if you want to import games from other regions that aren't available in the UK or on the UK Playstation Store, then, again, you might want that disc option.

I'm a collector, so I like getting games on discs anyway.

I've had every PS console at launch since the PS2, and launch versions ALWAYS have design faults and problems. For that reason I'm going to wait for the second or third models of the 'phat' PS5 (but before the inevitable Slim). Most launch titles are usually pretty average, too. I'm happy to let others be the beta testers this time!

My main issue with the PS5 is the cost of the controller. That's the problem with having all these hi-tech features - they drive the costs up without really adding much beyond gameplay gimmicks. I'd love for Sony to release a simpler version of the controller that I can buy as my Player 3 and 4 controllers for party-type and sports games.

Backwards compatability also allows us who are pro disc to play our old PS4 games which we have on disk. A switch to just a digital console would mean I'd have to keep my PS4 console near the TV taking up space etc.

Would you download Fifa for a PlayStation or would you download it?

As I said, it's been a while. I do fancy a console again.

You can buy FIFA on a disc, but to use a disc you need either of the premium consoles; the PS5 or Xbox Series X.

The two cheap models; the PS5 digital and the Xbox Series S are all digital. There is no disc drive and you need to download the game instead through the consoles’ store fronts.

If you’re mainly a FIFA man, I’d say save £110 and just get the Series S. That being said the PS5 digital wouldn’t be a bad choice either.

Why would you buy a digital over one with a disc drive with the exception of a cheaper price? I literally know nothing about these things these days.

I'd be Fifa, GTA, a racing game and maybe one or two others. Wrestling perhaps too. But mainly football.

People with PC's haven't bought games on disk for years mine was like 2010 or something. It's about time consoles took the plunge.

Also be aware that going digital only reduces your buying power. You're restricted to digital only outlets, and for some titles, particularly the smaller ones, I have only ever seen the PlayStation Store carrying them, so you pay whatever they list them at.

With a disc you can still take advantage of digital sales, plus grabbing discs when on offer or even second hand.

A key example of this is pre orders. Sony will want £60 or so digitally, whereas on disc you may pay £40 for pre order as Amazon, Argos, game, Tesco, asda, shopto and others compete for your order. So far Sony have been restrictive over availability of digital keys via non Sony outlets and I don't see this changing. They have a monopoly on digital ps4 sales. Microsoft isn't so bad as deals do crop up for keys on cdkeys and others, but it's a similar situation.

Personally I have too much of a backlog, and also too many bad launch console experiences (2 x red ring of death xbox 360s and a yellow light of death PS3) to jump right in, although admittedly this generation have resorted confidence in hardware build quality.

Happy to wait a year or two.

4/5 games and Sony have clawed it back.
