General Videogame Thread

Is there anywhere that hasn't sold out of the new XBox? John Lewis made some available online this morning but they sold out really quickly.
I kept persisting on Game, got one at about 12.00 today. Kept getting to payment and it says out of stock. Eventually it went through, delivery not until 18th December though.

Thought xbox were selling direct as well? or are they out of stock too?

edit: looks like that was just a rumour.

It's arrived!! Setting it up now. Give my impressions in a bit but it's a heavy fucker!!!

Set mine up and already impressed by how quick and silent it is, maybe as I'm used to my day one Xbox One heaving like a fat lad walking up a hill! Massive collection of games available on games pass now EA are on there, even if EA don't release a lot that interests me as mainly a solo gamer.

Not particularly impressed that they kept the same sort of dashboard/interface as before, as I think it's clunky as hell and the store is incredibly unhelpful compared to the PS store, but I guess once I figure my way around it'll be alright.

Already seeing issues with download only, as Microsoft aren't exactly great at the whole online marketplace thing in my experience, even now it looks like they won't even let you buy the regular edition of Assassins Creed from the store, only the two special editions? That's either really stupid, or the store is just incredibly unhelpful and I can't find the normal edition. Not to mention it'd be £8 more than buying the disk version of Amazon anyway. Either way, not a great start. (not that I actually planned on buying it today and I could always buy a code online if I wanted, but still)

Am I right in saying though that I could buy it on the Xbox One and then with Smart Delivery get it for free on the Series S/X? Does that only work with online versions or could I buy the disc for my Xbox One, then download it on my Series S?

EDIT- don't think the disc plan would work as you need to have the disc in the Xbox for it to work, which obviously you can't on a Series S. So I would have to buy digitally on the Xbox One if I wanted to do it that way

You lucky, lucky bastard. I have no hope of getting either of the consoles this year since I was unable to pre-order.

Best bet will be next Thursday for the PS5. Use as many laptops, tablets and phones as you can to load up different websites. I managed to get an Xbox for my mate today just by looking at Twitter at 8am to see which website were having the most success with purchases. I got one from Asda with no fuss at all. I tried five minutes later and the website was slow and you couldn’t get through to the payment. It’s all about the timing.

I don't pretend to know a great deal about tech but have seen how fast speed travel is in the witcher 3 on xbox series x and it's bloody impressive. I personally found load times in certain games off putting and a chore.

If I was to play my ps4 copy of the witcher 3 on the PS5 (disc version obvs), am I likely to see an improvement in load times?

Mine arrived tea time but didn't get the chance to set it up until late last night. Didn't receive the Game Pass Ultimate that I should have so haven't had a look at that yet.
Installed a couple of games (one downloaded one on disc) overnight so I'll have a little play later on.

Does anybody on here play their console on a monitor and if so, do you have any recommendations? Considering using one for my PS4 (hopefully PS5 at some point next year).

I usually play on my 4k TV in the lounge but thinking of setting something up in the spare room for when the war office is watching TV.

Budget? Almost anything will work fine for a console tbh as using a controller you're not going notice/need/want 144hz+. Not sure what res the new consoles will do? But I frequently ran my PS4 on a 27" 2560 x 1440 LG and it was great. The 32" VA monitors are really impressive for gaming too.

Got my Series X yesterday and it's a super impressive piece of kit. Games load so fast and Gears 5 looks incredible.

Was looking forward to trying Valhalla but my Argos order never arrived...
Apparently Argos are have issues with game deliveries and my copy should be with me by the end of the week

I'm happy paying up to £200. It's just a contingency set up for my desk and will probably use head phones. Thinking budget and space wise it's more appropriate than putting in another TV.

9 years ago today Skyrim released, how the hell is that 9 years?? Absolutely loved that game I really did, but for some reason never got into ESO. Anyone played ESO much? Hopefully with the new generation of consoles we get next version of elder scrolls and it isn’t restricted to MS.

My series s has arrived and I'm taken aback by how tiny it is. Especially considering the enormous ps5, its bizarre how small and light this is. Probably the size of a small shoe box but only half as thick
Is the 4k thing the only difference between the XBOX releases - not sure why they have released two.......

Still one of my favourite games of all time and I still dip into it now and again and I still find something new even though I've probably put in over 500 hours into it

Probably 4/5 years since my last play through but just dont have the hours these days to put in. I used to just spend days and days walking around, peaking over moutain tops to see a distant village or valley to explore. Like you say, always found really cool missions and loot to earn that id never seen before on my second play through, truely great game.
