To many of them die young, LOD's Hawk is another :(

Another AWA talent stolen by Vince McMahon. The "Road Warriors" were so hugely popular that a massive crowd reaction to a surprise is still known as a "Road Warrior Pop". Cena has been criticised for never receiving a Road Warrior Pop, unlike Austin.

Another one taken via heart attack.

Tornado was from one of those "cursed families" and has a bigger story than just the WWF.

Tornado was called Kerry Von Erich, from the Von Erich wrestling family. His Dad, Fritz Von Erich was a huge deal in the 50s and 60s and eventually bought a "territory" called World Class Championship Wrestling. You have to understand that whilst WWF was the only wrestling show shown over here, the US had a cartel like agreement called the National Wrestling Alliance whereby each federation could only promote shows in certain areas. This worked for the benefit of all as back in them days there were only local TV stations rather than national TV stations, so each federation had it's own TV show in it's own area with it's own wrestler and many of them were very successful, drawing 20,000 a week to their shows. Vince McMahon broke his agreement, stole everybody's best wrestlers and promoted worldwide. WWE are the Manchester United of wrestling.

When Fritz Von Erich bought World Class Championship Wrestling, he made his sons the "babyfaces" (good guys) of the show. This was because babyfaces make you the money in merchandising and in a cutthroat world of 30 different territories, talent stealing was rife. Hulk Hogan started in AWA rather than WWF as did Sgt Slaughter, Mr Perfect and many others made their name their like Shawn Michaels.

Anyway, Fritz had 5 lads called Kevin, Chris, David, Kerry, and Mike. All of these were trained from birth to be the top "good guys" in World Class Championship Wrestling to varying degrees. They had an enormously successful series of matches with a team called The Freebirds which included Michael Hayes/Doc Hendrix who used to manage the Hardy Boyz in WWF and is now on their "creative staff" (the people who write the story lines and determine the match ending).

It was a case of too much too soon for all of the Von Erichs. Kevin is alive, Chris, Mike and David committed suicide, and Kerry (Texas Tornado) died from a painkiller overdose, a common problem in wrestling.

Texas Tornado also only had one foot which is an interesting fact. His other was a prosthetic.

is Brutus the Barber Beefcake still going and what about Greg the Hammer Valentine

Brutus Beefcake is alive and well. He is Hulk Hogan's best mate and Hulk tries to get him employed anywhere that he goes though he's semi-retired and doing one off shows for the payday every now and again.

Greg Valentine is 62 and still working on the odd independent event that run in local gyms or high schools. He's healthy enough and the WWE brings him in for a big payoff every now and again.

Also; yes, yes, I know

I remember the Freebirds, NWA used to be shown middle of the night on itv back in the day, used to get Rick Flair as well as part of the 4 horsemen with Sid Vicious, Arn Anderson and another who i forget the name of, i went to see the WWF as it was then at Sheffield Arena in the early 90s, main event was Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs Yokozuna if i remember it right

Re: Royal Rumble On Tonight

Watched a documentary on the dynamite kid recently, very enjoyable, great insight into the hart stable and stampede wrestling, he's now back in the northwest, Wigan I think, wheel chair bound, also recently had a stroke

From a little research I could gather, I reckon McMahon will be fucked in the next couple of years, especially after them re opening the Benoit case, seems vinny has been getting them all off there tits for the past 20 years...

Re: Royal Rumble On Tonight

Fair play but "NWA" was many different companies under the same banner, a bit like the "Premier League" compared to "West Brom". You almost certainly watched WCW by your memories, which was NWA affiliate in Atlanta before it went on its own and copied WWF.

Freebirds were the Tony Cottee/Steve Claridge of wrestlers.

>WWF as it was then at Sheffield Arena in the early 90s, main event was Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs Yokozuna if i remember it right

A bit of mixed memories there, I went to that in 1993. It was Hacksaw versus Lex Luger and Yoko interfered after the match. The tour was called Rampage '93.

The Main Event match is here:

The full card was

Headshrinker Fatu vs Nasty Boy Brian Knobbs
Doink the Clown vs Kamala
Mr. Perfect vs Headshrinker Samu
Bob Backlund vs Damien Demento
Typhoon vs The Brooklyn Brawler
Crush vs Shawn Michaels
The Narcissist Lex Luger vs Jim Duggan via DQ

-- Wed Jan 29, 2014 12:12 am --

He's local. Wigan is a worldwide famous town as far as "shoot fighting" is concerned (trying to get people to submit legitimately). There was a place called "The Snake Pit" trained many fighters who went on to train some of the wrestlers and on ad on. Hulk Hogan can trace his lineage back to The Snake Pit (infuriatingly for some).

Billy Riley was one of the toughest motherfuckers who ever lived:

Yeah thats the one, i'm on that video at some stage with a giant foam Hulk Hogan hand looking a right cock, it might have been WCW but can remember Rick Flair being brought to the ring as NWA world champ, you used to get an hour of it at something like 2am, can remember Sid Vicious leaving to join the WWF and also Lex Luger who was the crowd favorite, did seem to be a feeder type organisation for WWF back then, i wonder if that was before the Ted Turner money?
Also to add with you talking about crowd pops, i think the biggest i have ever seen was an Ultimate Warrior reaction as he came running to the ring, looked like a football crowd after a goal scored, will have to try to remember who he was fighting,i'm getting old and forgetful

Simply cannot believe anybody with half a brain watches that shite.

I agree. What is the enjoyment in watching a pre planned fake fight between blokes in underpants. Very odd

I'm kind of shocked at this thread by Damo as well..

(somehow there has to be a rational explanation, but I'm not clever enough to find it)

It's because the preconceptions of the preconceptions of wrestling are wrong

Nobody will go into a Breaking Bad thread and say "hahahaha, Walt doesn't really exist!!! You stupid bastards"

Yet people presume that about wrestling fans.

It's a TV program that is both entertaining within the "story" like a soap opera yet has some incredible athleticism, and I feel the most personal type of storytelling possible.

The wrestlers try to tell a mini story in every match. They control the live crowd and the pacing to produce something that is really excellent.

A good example, people say that they enjoyed Stone Cold Steve Austin. Why was this? I think it's because Austin was an anti-authority figure who told his boss to go fuck himself constantly and he was a ruthless fucker.

In the 50s people would have found this deplorable yet in that era it was "cool". wrestling taps into society unlike any other form of storytelling. People lived vicariously through Stone Cold and wanted to see him on the show.

Stone Cold existed because the WWF listened to the crowd reactions, saw that a "bad guy" was getting "good guy" reactions so shifted their storylines to suit it.

I love the sport, I really do. Nothing comes close in having the finger on the pulse of society and in long term storytelling with a genuine athleticism to it.

I enjoy watching people do incredible athletic acts. I enjoy watching people who interact with a live crowd (like a stand up). I enjoy a good storytelling source based over several episodes (like a drama series). I also enjoy hearing the behind the scenes gossip as it puts into perspective the physical sacrifice that is made for the entertainment of the fans.

I can't understand why people cannot like this but can like Eastenders.

Sort of.

If that's the best we can get then we'll take it in the thread but I was trying to show people that it was a legitimate form of entertainment no different from Coronation Street that contains some ridiculous athleticism. In fact, let me show you some of this. Bare with me whilst I find some Kofi Rumble clips.

-- Wed Jan 29, 2014 12:40 am --

Remember that if your feet touch the floor then you are eliminated.

This is ridiculous athleticism.
