Memories of being a kid watching Sunday afternoon football highlights in the days before wall to wall football. I remember standing in the corner of the North stand and he was climbing up the stairs to the gantry in the Maine stand to do his commentary. A bloke shouted, "Get up there Gerry!" as he was looking a bit tentative and i didn't blame him. He looked around, gave a big grin and a thumbs up. Rest in peace Gerry

Agree entirely.. he NEVER came across as partial in his commentary, described what was happening on the pitch with clarity, like Kenneth Wolstenholme before him.

Very rarely made a gaffe but he did once come out with the classic 'Chris Waddle is off the pitch just now.. exactly the position he's at his most menacing..'
