Gigs Thread

Going to see Deep Purple next Saturday.

It'll be the third time I've seen them, the first time being in the early 70's, when concerts were loud. Very loud.

I doubt many on here will have heard of him but I saw David Wilcox last night at a small theatre. Sat on the front row which was basically the stage. The man is 75 and can still play and sing like he did in the 80’s.

Never heard of him so I clicked on link. He sounds a bit like Seasick Steve who I saw a few years ago.
 
I went to see Bob Dylan last night in Liverpool, my first time. I was some what in awe, a really fantastic experience.

For those who haven't seen Dylan, or know much about it, he is extremely re-interpretive, the bigger-hitters (e.g. All Along the Wacth Tower, It Ain't Me Babe, Baby Blue) are changed massively. But he has every right to do what he wants with his material, and the lads I was with who've seen him multiple times say they have seen a different style of gig every time they go to watch him. It is heavily based on his latest album, Rough and Rowdy ways, which made 9 or 10 tracks of of the 95 minute, 17 track gig.

It's a difficult thing to do, to stay objective about a gig when it's someone who you really enjoy listening to, but if I am being perfectly honest, you'll see better gigs musically/technically, and you'll certainly hear better singers (notes, power) and get much better interaction and energy, and a whole host of things....but those things will never make up for the fact you're hearing that voice live, the man who wrote these timeless tracks in front of you. Being saved by gravitas and presence only works for very few people. I have a shred of empathy for those who come away disappointed they didn't see they're beloved songs in something resembling their original form, but Dylan has never been this way, plus he's 83.

I had decent seats, and the first time he brought out his harmonica I had to pinch myself, i was watching one of popular music's all time greats live, in front of me. Away from the songs, not a man of many words (practically none) and he is shuffling now, holding onto the piano regularly, who knows how many years are left in him. Really loved it, and one for the memories. 4.5/5

Went to see a band called B - Movie, sat night at 'The Canvas' in Mansfield Notts.
Decent performance , packed friendly crowd, very good venue
Excellent DJ before and after to please the early 80s electronic crowd Inc .'.Hard Times' human league , 'Sensoria' Cabaret Voltaire, 'The Model' Kraftwerk Depeche Mode and early Simple Minds ( 83 84 85 )

For those that don't know B Movie from way back in 1980 ,they almost made it with' Nowhere Girl' , great track . This was them coming back to their home town, rather poignant as the drummer was presented with a gift half way through as he battles back from illness ...I got the impression he made a tremendous effort to make that gig...he got a rousing reception from an appreciative crowd.

Not been for 3 years now,so I'll take your word on that.
I'm hearing good reports of a Doncaster based smaller festival which a mate of mine has been going to,think it might be called 'Something to smile about' ,iirc.
I've seen Killing Joke and New Model Army at Bearded Theory, over the years.Fantastic location, great countryside around the site ,which I often slipped into to observe nature. Honey Buzzards, Hares and Herons spring to mind...
