Gillingham v Manchester City 1999

It was reviewed in the matchday programme tonight by Daniel Morehead - and it's a very lovely review (pasted below). I'd hoped the editor would have used the front cover on the page, but heigh ho. If you want to read it, it's on page 56. :o)

Looks Like Scunny Next Season
* * * * *

"I know this sounds terrible but I still didn't think that was enough. I didn't envisage what was going to happen after that. I thought the time was up." - Kevin Horlock.

It seems hard to believe that it is 15 years since the Blues met Gillingham at Wembley in what proved to be one of the most important games in the club's history, but in some ways, it could not seem further away. Comparisons have often been drawn between the dramatic Horlock and Dickov inspired comeback and the Dzeko and Aguero inspired title win in 2012, with players from the former game even commenting on the two in Looks Like Scunny Next Season.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Play-Off final, author and Bluemoon podcast host David Mooney sought out every player of the promotion-winning side, producing a unique and thoroughly entertaining series of interviews.

Beginning with a foreword from former City manager Joe Royle, the book then features a match report of the final, before the interview begin with a familiar number 1, Nicky Weaver. Although the interviews are obviously focused on the '99 final, the players discuss their entire careers at the club, with revealing and entertaining anecdotes littered throughout the book.

Mooney makes no attempt to analyse as a neutral observer, and the book is somewhat stronger for it. This is a labour of love, written by a fan, for the fans. What soon becomes clear is that this team were not just City players, but City fans. After sharing such an experience together, how could they not be? Paul Dickov perhaps says it best: "People might say Aguero has stolen my thunder, but there was nobody more delighted than me when he scored that goal."

Please can anyone who has read the book on Kindle or in paperback give it a rating and a review on the Amazon page? It would mean a huge deal to me!

This book really is a very good read.

If you were around at the time it will bring the memories flooding back.
If you were not around at the time you will pick up on a vital chapter in the clubs history.
Strongly recommended.

still remember the look on that stewards face as he tried to stop hundreds trying to get back in after dicky scored.
And yes. I had binned it, not my finest decision of all time but apparently milwall were outside.
I know I know.

The similarities to the Gillingham game and the QPR one are quite spooky. Both huge days when we didn't really perform and almost blew what on paper looked easy tasks.

After that game i never thought i would go through anything like that again, then came QPR!

What about Blackburn away in 2000. They battered us most of that game

I'll never forget that game.... Somebody was looking down on us that game, that's for sure

I know MCFC gave one of my books away on City Blog yesterday, but I believe they've got another two over the coming days. I think the publisher sent them more to give away.

If you'd rather be sure, they're still £10 in paperback here: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.davemooney.co.uk/books/looks-like-scunny-next-season" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.davemooney.co.uk/books/looks ... ext-season</a>
Or it's on Kindle for £4.79 here: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Looks-Like-Scunny-Next-Season/dp/095731132X" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/Looks-Like-Scun ... 095731132X</a>

The Bury game, the York game, and the Gillingham game.

Three opponents, who City have played more than once, but who will always be associated with one particular fixture.

Harry Dowd once scored against Bury and I remember losing at Gigg Lane in the 70s, and playing them at Old Trafford in the mid 80s. However, “The” Bury game will always be remembered for the repercussions, both on and off the pitch.

City beat York on the way to Wembley in 74, but “The” York game has gone down in City folklore, in the same way as “The” Swindon game for the previous generation.

City played Gillingham seven times under Royle and Keegan, but “The Gillingham game will forever be remembered for the emotion of Dickov’s last gasp equalizer.

Was too young to go, my Dad told me the only reason he didn't leave after the second Gillingham goal was so he could boo the fuckers off the pitch. Turned out ok in the end !
