Fan gets a kicking from a player

no Fat Eric isnt back in town .... but AZ eeper gets attacked by a fan that runs onto the pitch, attempts to kung-fu kick the goalie.
The Goalie spots him, turns are gets his own kung-fu kick into the fan. As the fan goes sprawling to the floor (in shock obviously as he didn't realise the goalie was that good with is feet), the goalie kicks him twice before stewards intervene.
What does the ref do? Sends the goalie off.
What does the AZ manager do? Pulls all his players off in protest, abandoning the game after 36 minutes.
Was the ref to send off the goalie for defending himself and then retaliating?
