Gout

Just over my last bout. Has moved from my toe to my knee now which whilst still hurting like a motherfucker, nowhere near as bad. Normally comes every 6/8 months, lasts about 5 days and is gone.
I thought about giving up all the things I enjoy but have decided it’s the price I’m going to have to pay to continue.
I’m ok with the trade off tbh.
See your doctor, I'm now on Allopurinol, one pill a day. Had a couple of attacks early on when taking it, but nothing for around a year now, I think.

I suffered for about 10 years with it. Visited my doctor 5 or 6 times who wouldnt commit to it being gout. He sent me for xrays and claimed it was a tendon strain. After one particularly bad bout I went to A&E. The triage nurse at stepping hill sent me down the road to the walk-in centre. On hobbling into the doctors room he exclaimed 'here's a man with gout' He arranged for me to go on allopurinol, and after the initial bout you get after starting Allopurinol, I'm nearly 3 years clear. Some of the foods mentioned on here like shellfish apples and tomatoes were triggers for me but mushrooms! Seemed to be my catalyst

Allopurinol is the answer, resisted them for year's until I got fed up of hobbling around a few times a year, went on a jolly to Antwerp and all weekend in my room.
Started on 1 a day then 2 for a spell but back on just the one again.
Went through all the triggers mentioned and still had gout after giving those a wide birth.
Now I can eat without thinking if it will trigger an episode and haven't had an attack in must be four or five years.
The thing that stopped me going on allopurinol was thinking I was too young ( early fifties) to take a tablet every day until a workmate said he went on them at nineteen and got on with his life.

Well I’m just starting my 4th bout since lockdown!

These last 3 time have been quite odd tho. Taking a week or so to build up then lasting 4/5 weeks but with not as bad pain as before. Still bad throbbing and hobbling around mind you but can at least manage to put a sock and slippers on.

Anyone else had it like this? Used to be pretty quick onset and last a few days.

Same. that's weird, usually comes and goes in week, this time not had it as bad but lasting about a month, had to get some neproxen from docs. Still sore

Suffered - and I mean SUFFERED (as others who have had it will testify) for years.

Narpoxen and alupironol are the answers, again as everyone has said.

Agree with the poster who said starting aluprinol whilst suffering an attack will aggravate the attack,

The best advice I ever had from a doctor, was from a doctor who suffered with gout himself.

He said there are a lot of myths surrounding gout and it isn't down to "just drinking port or red wine and eating venison or red meat"
Yes, diet habits can affect it, but it can also be hereditary, it can also be brought on because of stress as well as other things - it's caused by a build up of uric acid and your body not being able to break it down quickly enough, so drinking lots of water does help.

He also said if you stop eating and drinking everything that is bad for you, you'll just be miserable - so everything in moderation is the advice.

Foolishly I stopped taking aluprinol and thought I'd got away with it until a few weeks ago and I had another attack/flare up and it was excruciating - I couldn't get a shoe on so lost time at work and even having the duvet on it at night was unbearable. You can't put your foot up to rest it, you can't have your foot down, you can't walk properly and then, because you're walking unnaturally other parts of your body start to hurt!!

So a prescription of narpoxen, plus another tablet because aluprinol and narpoxen eat away your stomach lining, so the other tablet compensated for that, and I'm now back to normal and taking an aluprinol a day.........and I'll never not take one a day again because I never want Gout ever again!!

I wouldn't wish it on anybody, yet part of me wishes everybody experiences it just once, so they could understand what us sufferers endure.

Even now when I am "gout free" my big toe joints and ankle joints always give me a bit of grief because of the gout attacks over the years - I'm only 51 and I follow the Adidas trainer thread closely because I have a fetish for trainers, yet have to be choosy over what I can and cannot wear on my feet because of gout attacks

Simply put, gout is the worst pain ever!!

Absolutely awful pain, in fact nothing else I have ever experienced has come close and I've only ever had one attack for about 4 days, when it happened to me I literally woke up in the middle of the night and thought someone had stabbed my foot, little did I know, it was just my duvet resting on my foot. Even after a few days of sickening pain my big toe turned upwards and took weeks of me massaging it to get it to sit straight again, it was like it had gone into some form of spasm from the pain.

I've had it a few different times in my feet or toes. Only had it once in about the last 5 years, which was about a month ago. It lasted for about 5 days last time. I found taking Ibuprofen works best for me. I think I rarely get issues now mainly due to not consuming most of the known triggers anymore. I think that what you eat & drink plays the biggest part in flare ups.

Im getting sick to death of gout.

i've had it 6 times since lockdown started back in March. but instread fo 4/5 days its 4/5 weeks at a time. mild for a week or so, bad for a week then 3/4 weeks slowly getting back to normal.

I had it from early Dec through xMas and new year finally settled down towards mid Jan. then 2 weeks ago start up on the other fucking foot.

Mine will be a mix of diet and Hereditory. my Granddad got it, my dad gets it as does my brother.

problem is i've not been formally diagnosed so cant get meds. and really having issues getting registered at a docs to get it diagnosed!.

When you do get registered, you need a blood test between attacks (give it 2 weeks after your last attack ends) as the blood test needs to trap the uric acid in the blood stream but when you're having an attack the uric acid is in the affected joint, crystallised.

If you have problems registering with a GP surgery, call the NHS England Customer Contact Centre on 0300 311 22 33.

Just the name of this thread had me grimacing, I’ve even started to limp now.
I’m dreading waking up in the morning!

I've had gout several times, a heart attack (had a stent), prostate cancer and vertigo over the last years.

Of them all, vertigo was the worst, followed by gout.

By the way I was wide awake when they inserted the stent at Wythenshawe who were 1st class.
