Government ban on Petrol and Diesel vehicles (by 2040)

A Tesla supercharger gives 170 miles of range in 30 minutes, so I think in 23 years, that should be improved dramatically. This announcement is basically the UK getting in line with other European countries that have already announced the same thing. By then, the big manufacturers won't be making diesel or petrol anyway. Volvo have already announced that all of their cars will be at least part electric by 2019.

well right now, a tesla can do 170miles on a 30m charge for at tesla charging points, if you bought a tesla before Jan you get to charge for free forever, if you bought after that point you get 1000miles for free, after 1000miles its 20p per KWh of charge, so 170m of travel will cost £17, at home using your own electricity its about £6 for a full over night charge that will get you about 250 miles.

in the states these are becoming quite popular now, someone drove one from New York to LA with zero cost in the last month or 2.

in another 23 years I can see the range and charging times being way more than your specs.

Spreadsheet Phil has already indicated the Govt will have to look at how they raise revenue off this so enjoy the £6 fill up whilst it lasts......

a laudible aim - meanwhile one can fill a fossil fuelled car from empty to brim in 5 minutes - not everyone has that amount of time available to refuel

I accept that not everyone has a drive or garage, but those that do will be incentivised to stick the car on charge overnight, on a timer so that it charges when the demand for electricity is low, which should reduce the need for extra generating capacity. The Telegraph are claiming that we will need 10 additional Hinkley sized power stations, but that's assuming everyone charges as soon as they get home from work. It would be absurd beyond belief if the government allowed that to happen.

Obviously its not as convenient as filling up at your local petrol station. But I wonder how long it will be before the existing network of petrol stations starts to become uneconomic. Once the number of electric cars exceed say 20% the reduced demand will start leading to closures. If all cars have to be electric by 2040, then by 2030-5 it will probably start to become a pain finding a petrol station in the suburbs.

Given the fact the Government backtrack on proposals they make all the time, I would give this the credence it deserves.

Maybe if we had the infrastructure in place required, I'd take it a bit more seriously.

Oh and the fact we haven't the capacity, and most probably won't have given the fact it takes over 10 years to build a nuclear power station. Where does the Govt. propose we got the extra capacity from? We're getting told that the National Grid is working at near capacity now without the idea of all vehicles being electric

Having said this, it might stop parents doing the school run when they live 100 yards from the school and get off their fat arses and walk a bit more!

Just imagine if fast chargers were able to completely "fill" a car in 10 mins. Now consider a petrol station - say a popular one like a Tesco fore court for example. What- say 16 - 20 pumps. In a busy period they probably do 20 cars fill ups in say 10 mins or less. Then imagine the queues whilst electric cars stop and charge for 10 mins - maybe a bit more. As I say I don't doubt that non-fossil fuel powered vehicles are the future but right now if you consider the petrol cars progress we are somewhere around the Bull Nosed Morris Oxford / Jowett Javelin in the evolutionary development - a long way from where we need to be. Will be interesting to see where we are come say 2030

Honda already have a hydrogen car in production.

Hydrogen power is the future

Not electricity

As long as there is sea water we will have hydrogen

It's just safe tanking and cost holding it up

Once that's cracked electric power will be dead

The only reason for this is the roads can't possibly cope with the amount of traffic now, so the gov plan to get us off the roads by introducing electric cars by which time people won't be able to afford them, they will introduce stricter mot laws to get petrol and diesel cars off the road, most of our jobs will probely be taken by robots or some sort of automation you see that now in supermarkets, petrol stations, cinemas, wages will still be crap up north, the electric cars will cost upwards of 20k, the only ones affording these new cars will be people on anything above 50k therefore reducing traffic congestion, happy days for gov all around the world, glad I won't be around to see the misery this will bring, ps do you know of anyone having breathing problems due to the emissions now ?

But Tesco won't have petrol stations, they'll just put chargers in their car park. And they'll make them take however long they want to keep you in their shop.
