Government ban on Petrol and Diesel vehicles (by 2040)

Are you lot all in your 80's ? Why are so many saying they 'won't be around to see this' or 'be long gone' by then ... it's 20 years away!

Honda already have a hydrogen car in production.

Hydrogen power is the future

Not electricity

As long as there is sea water we will have hydrogen

It's just safe tanking and cost holding it up

Once that's cracked electric power will be dead

Just being pedantic, Hyrdrogen cars convert the hydrogen into Electricity, so a Hydrogen car is an electric car, just not storing the power in a battery.

which is what makes it the way forward - on board generation - fill up with water in the fashion we do now - much better than heavy batteries and restricted range. Your fuel station is effectively a tap................

If the government are really committed to no new petrol cars after 2040 then in reality it will become the norm well before then. Manufacturers will heavily push sales of electric vehicles. It will be interesting to guess at what point new electric car sales will exceed petrol car sales, my guess would be 2027.

10 years!

Impossible.

Where's the infrastructure to provide the extra demand for electricity and the charging points for the vehicles.

It's another pipe dream that will be kicked into the long grass.

The infrastructure has been building for years. Here's a current map of charging points.

And as I said in a previous post, the first coast to coast ( NY to LA) drive in a tesla occurred recently.

I believe there will be an exponential growth in charging points now, in 10 years i would be surprised if there isn't at least 1 at every petrol station.

how long does it take to charge up?

currently, Entirely dependant on how far you want to go. "another 20 miles" you could probably charge in the same time it takes to fill up with petrol, a full charge at a supercharger is 30 mins at the moment.

Having had a ride in my bosses Tesla yesterday I can say they are the future!. feck me the accelleration on that thing is amazing. He just leaves his plugged in over night to ensure he's always got a decent charge.

Edit: apparently there is currently a deal going on with electric cars, if your a business owner you can write off 80% of the cost against corporation tax.
