Greatest night games at the Etihad

City v Schalke
1969/70
5 - 1
One of the best performances of the Joe Mercer era...City were regal
Agreed, we were 1-0 down from the first leg and Schalke were led by Reinhard Libuda, who was arguably one of the top players in Europe at the time. A sublime performance from City that night, for sure!

Neil Young played a blinder against Schalke and led the charge for us throughout the game!

There were other great nights during that run to winning the Cup Winners' Cup in 1970; the 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, after the first-leg 3-3 draw over there; and the quarter-final 1-0 win against Academica de Coimbra, after the 0-0 draw in Portugal.. on a knife edge throughout with the last one, Academica were brutal and incredibly defensive until Tony Towers blasted the late winner!

Of course, there have been lots of wonderful nights either at Maine Road or The Etihad down the years (especially the past decade.. and most especially the two 'Vinnie' games against The Red Filth and Leicester!) but those games in 1970 were completely new ground for us as a club, players, managers and supporters.

Eeeeee.. 'appy days!

Monaco game was incredible. What a team they had and we beat them at home. Not enough in the end but a cracking game.
Agree. The best ones tend to be where nobody has a clue what will happen next, least of all the coaches, and where both teams go at it hammer and tong. That’s why I chose European nights when the opposition sides actually came and went toe-to-toe.

Some of the domestic games may have led to significant results, but they were often unenjoyable games played against parked buses.

Best atmosphere - United 1-0
Probably the best game and most memorable for wrong reason - Spurs 4-3
Greatest night - Leicester 1-0
