Gritty films

As people have said, Dead Man's Shoes

The Machinist

Requiem For a Dream (as per others)

As somebody mentioned, Once Were Warriors

The Unforgiven

Raging Bull

superb film,quality job by bale!

Some good films already mentioned.

Once Were Warriors is probably the grittiest i've seen. City of God (although my favourite film) was too vibrant and too nice to look at to be gritty.

Dead Man's Shoes is cracking aswell.

Fateless is pretty gritty in a depressing way. I think it's Hungarian.

Bus 174 would be a good shout aswell, although more interesting and sad than gritty.

Sin Nombre is fairly gritty and pretty good aswell.

This???
Taxidermia
György Pálfi's bizarre, sometimes grotesque film is set over three generations, beginning with Csaba Czene as Morosgoványi Vendel, a sexually frustrated orderly during the war who relieves his tensions in the most outlandish, gross ways (one of which results in him producing fiery ejaculations).

ok. First post. Couldn't resist on this thread.
Some fine , fine filumns listed here, esp Nil By Mouth and Dead Mans Shoes...
Also liked Mesrine, but if ya like Gritty and French, look NO further than the classic Irreversible...not for the faint hearted though....

Just looked for this on Amazon, and they have one on Region1, so no good, and the other is a special edition for £80 or £20 used!

One that's not been mentioned yet, and probably overlooked because of the main actor, is JCVD. Brilliant film. Jean Claude van Damme plays himself and goes back to Belgium, only to be caught up in a heist. Brilliant, and van Damme's performance is awesome, especially a monologue he does to the camera.

-- Tue Jun 08, 2010 12:21 pm --

Been on Amazon and put a lot of these films on my wishlist. Just for info, a helluva a lot of them are by Tartan Video, so they obviously specialise in a certain genre.

Some great recommendations though, Bluemooners are certainly a diverse bunch.
