Ground Ownership

Isn't one of the reasons the ground isn't being bought outright by our owners because a large chunk would go straight to Sport England and not stay in Manchester?

This is my basic understanding .

The money would go to sport england ( based in London ? ) .

Also the approx £3,000,000 ( rent ) that goes to Man City Council would stop .

So basically the people of Manchester would be the losers .

How often do our owners rent something like this , there plan is helping Machester , Rags and Blues alike .

Right, for clarification!

Who owns the stadium?
The stadium is jointly owned by Sport England and Manchester City Council.

Why don't City just buy the stadium outright?
City pay an annual lump sum of about £3m to Manchester City Council. Buying the stadium would cost £50m+ - all of which would go to Sport England who mostly funded the the construction of the stadium in the first place. City's logic is that it makes more sense giving Manchester City Council £3m a year which will be reinvested into east Manchester rather than send £50 million to central government and which will provide benefit for east Manchester

Will City ever buy the stadium outright?
The lease was renegotiated in 2011. It is possible after a period of tenure, City will be given the opportunity to buy the stadium outright as the club will have deemed to have paid the market value of the stadium over the past 50+ years etc. To put simply - the two authorities might want to 'cash in' rather than risk the club moving elsewhere or building a new stadium.
Source which says Sport England jointly own it please.

Also, with naming rights City now pay around £5m per year to the MCC.

As I understand it the stadium is owned by MCC and they get the rent we pay in full but under the terms of the original funding the bulk of money from any sale would go back to sport England/lottery for use on new projects.

Appparently one particular pitch in this new training ground development that City are building has the abilty to 'change the grass' to match whatever surface City will be playing on next !
I did the tour in December and the guide told us there would be 5 pitches that replicate each of our main rivals pitches. I assume they will have regular mega truck racing on one to reproduce the surface at the swamp

Why don't we just buy it, gives the council a nice lump of money at these austerity times and we can do what we want with it?

Am i correct in saying that a smaller football club somewhere in the country league 2 or something, was able to buy its ground off the local council for something mad like £10? - I swear i read a post on here about it...

So if we gave the council £50 they'd be dead chuffed im sure!

A couple of points.

Although the funding for the stadium was provided by a number of sources including Sport England, MCC, Lottery and the Homes and Communities Agency (or whatever they call it now) none of these OWN any of the stadium.

Some of these funders would have to be repaid if the stadium is sold on under the original funding agreement but I have been told that their interest in the stadium is time limited.

The time limited aspect adds a new dimension to the reasons as to when/why the stadium might be refitted/rebuilt etc.

MCC and MCFC have entered into and amended various partnerships and agreements and have done so to accomodate the needs of the club and the local community whilst dodging round any issues that were inherited post 2002.

As has been said part of the negotiations were centred on an increased but ring fenced annual payment from MCFC to MCC which removed the complicated formula of X % over Y capacity after expenses that was originally put in place when we moved from Maine Road.

The new flat fee of iirc £4m p.a. goes straight into MCC sport and unlike the issues that, for example, Sheffield face with the Don Valley it means the extended 'campus' facilities are safe from here on in.

The flat fee also now allows City to monetise via sponsorship and image rights around the stadium.

The wider development on the collar site and the new academy basically brought together City, NEM and MCC land banks into one company in which MCC have a small interest with City being gifted all the land involved.

Part of the new arrangements means that City are time bound and would have to hand back ownership of the land they were gifted unless they complete developments within 15 years.

We are now into year 3 of that agreement.

I hope that all helps point you to timeframes and likely reasons for a chronology of Academy, Collar Site, Stadium?

What were you imagining MCC stood for? ;-)

I know what it stands for but I didnt want you to appear stupid ;-)

But point well made.

I should have listed the funders with one addendum, that MCC part funded and took whole ownership.
