You seem to forget Kompany too is culpable in that accusation. His lack of interest on Southampton's goal was pretty telling.
I don't think Pep thinks Kompany is as good as most fans do. Which is normal. Most fans still view Komps through the prism of What He has accomplished while Pep simply views it from what he currently does.
I. Won't lie to you, I haven't seen anything special from Kompany in 3 years. People bend over backwards to ascribe overall performances to him which is normal as they do it with many of our other greats too.
But a blockbuster performance from him I haven't seen in a while. The best defensive performances I've seen in the last 3 years have all come from Otamendi Zab or Sagna. And this season maybe 1 from Kolarov.
Komps at best has been decent in his appearances the last few years. Hence why people ascribe team calmness, confidence, belief and all these other unquantifiable characteristics to him, because its hard to point at any great individual performance.
And also they sometimes ascribe a win or a clean sheet to his presence. Its all fine and good, but nothing Komps has done recently suggests he is any better than the other 3 CBs. Pep on the other hand seems to think he might be worse based on his actions.
Either way I think he is at about the same e level.
In terms of specifics:
He is probably the best header of the ball
He is probably the weakest passer of the bunch.
Definitely the weakest carrying the ball forward.
Not as good as Ota at either tackling or intercepting, but likely better than the others.
His tactical positioning has been lauded here often, I'm not so sure it is justified.
But lets assume it is true that he is the best at defensive positioning. He is clearly the worst at positioning when we are in possession.
So there are advantages and flaws to his inclusion in games.
I find it funny that you can see all those faults with VK and you had no trouble seeing all of Hart's faults either but by fuck you were blinder than blind when it came to a certain new edition between the sticks, people quick to knock legends while defending the indefensible, it is an odd site at times.
Damocles, Shears and Fantasy Ireland, sneering and looking down their nose at anybody who deigns to have a different opinion to themselves, one out of that lot hated our most successful manager since Mercer and all of that while he was winning trophies but woe betide you if you don't back Pep to the hilt, if you do not you are nothing more than an foolish idiot.
It is a good job I believe he will be successful but still it doesn't stop you having a bit of a worry about some of the things that have happened this season.
